Correct, BUT, there are no mid size, Nippon, Camrys (even with boosted/modded GTEs from said Pupras transplanted into them) running those times either.

i was at tulsa in 1968 when the HEMI CUDA was new. i talked to Ronnie SOX standing next to the new HEMI CUDA. off the trailer it did 10.8 s.. the HEMI cudas running now ARE stock by NHRA rules, just like it was in 1968. i might be old but my memory isnt that bad. do i need to drag out the pics? so bring ANY THING that meets NHRA stock rules an run it against ANY HEMI CUDA. you will go home very quickly. if you wasnt there IT DIDNT HAPPEN.

NHRA stock rules (IE "stock car") doesn't make it stock bud

You and I have been over this before. The TASCA Super BOSS was a 10-second stock car too.... on polyglass tires. That doesn't mean that modified versions of the BOSS 429 that still fall within the NHRA definition of a "stock" motor are stock in terms of what is being discussed in this thread.

Edit: And the single most macho racing car ever built is the Porsche 917/30; no room for discussion or debate.

A blueprinted engine and suspension and tire set-up for B/Stock drag racing Boss 429 Mustang ran just about what the Boss 5.0 runs off the showroom floor now.

But we remember the Boss 302 and DZ302 Z/28 for being monsters. The published 1/4 mi times for those cars are actually not quite as good as the current Camry V6. Or Accord V6 for that matter. If you found a set of bias belted Polyglas or Wide Oval tires tires for your 1969 Boss 302 or Z/28, leave the Camry V6 alone.

You gotta give morris one thing: That Hemi Cuda in that video was a DOG. It simply wasn't running well. Also the Buick had long tube headers visible in several different shots. There's more, I ain't takin' notes...

The one thing that wasn't mentioned was the variance in motors back then. You could find huge differences from car to car, a half a second in the 1/4 mile was common among big engine cars.

The most macho car is the one driven by the guy who didn't check to see what cars other people considered macho.

THIS^^^ is kind of my philosophy on being what many/most in this here land (and possibly the rest of the globe) call "a real man".

As far as I'm concerned one is NOT a "real man" if he must take heed, and obey the 'rules' that others set about being said "real man".

Or the old race car drivers that used to hang the backs out of skinny tired open wheeled cars at 150mph while smoking a cigar and maybe wearing a leather helmet. Like Enzo, Moss or Fangio. Those guys had brass balls.

Probably most of them, especially in the handling segment. But that's not why you buy them.

One of my favourite cars of all time.


I just watched that video. That chevelle is almost the same as my uncles 70,his has the 4 speed and bigger gear. Its a rocket for its size and in all honesty I'd have to spray my mustang to beat him.
A 4v Mach can do 13.1 stock,on street tires. On sticky tires it can get into the 12s with a driver who knows the car(like me). That chevelle with meats and a stick could see those numbers,again with a driver who knows the car.
What impresses me about today's cars is that some sixxers can get into these numbers too,without boost.
Muscle cars are just that,however you don't just need muscle to go fast.
