Changed my oil today and put in M1 ESP 0W30 for the first time. I doubt there will be any noticeable difference from the Valvoline that was in there. The vehicle is my '23 Hyundai Santa Fe with the 2.5T engine. Direct injection for sure and I believe it also has port injection under certain circumstances. I've got 25,200 trouble free miles on the car and I enjoy this engine. Is it really quick? No. But the 277 hp and 311 torque moves it along pretty well. I also installed a Fram XG12811 filter that is supposed to 'protect' for 20,000 miles.

I've been doing oci of roughly 4000 miles since new. I'll continue that. I had wanted to vac out the oil in 4000 miles and leave the filter in place. But I also added a magnetic drain plug this time so I'll probably do a drain and fill next time so I can see if there is anything on the new plug. And concerning the filter, I would never run one to 20,000 miles, but would you folks feel comfortable running one of these Frams through 12,000 miles? I'm 74 now and having the ability to vac out the oil and leave a filter in place makes an oil change infinitely easier for me.

So that's my story. I'm running with the good stuff now. ;)

Cartridge yes. What I was running before were filters I got from a parts store like Federated. Old fashioned parts store where most stuff is in the back and the parts guy gets what you need.

Fram has been having issues with their canister filters lately. Obviously your application being a cartridge you can inspect it before and after. The filter is rated for 20K miles, so running it 12K shouldn't be an issue.

What issues? Which model number?

Fram seemed to be back in favor around here lately after years of being out of favor. Wasn't aware of canister problems.

Yes, they were for a number of years. You can have a look at the Oil Filter sub-forum. I would be less concerned with a cartridge like yours.

Seems like anything less than 5/6k miles intervals would be a waste unless the need was verified with an oil analysis.
I figure that with DI, a turbo and the fact that it's a dreaded H/K vehicle, that would put me into a shorter change interval. Plus, like most of us, I do a lot of short trip driving. But at least once a week I do a 100 mile round trip down into Maryland so about a third of my driving is not short trip/stop and go. Anyway, I'm comfortable with 4000. Maybe stretch it to 4500.

When I bought the car (new), the various people at the dealer gave me change intervals of 6000, 8000 and 10,000. I figure those guys don't know much about cars.

IMHO, since you can easily change oil and the engine is GDI with a turbo, just keep changing it every 4k miles. If you go longer then do UOA. I think filter can be changed every second oil change thou.

That tells me they don't know much about Hyundai/Kia's. They forgot to tell you, you bought a "rough service " oil change scenario car right off the dealer's lot on day one, no matter how you drive the car. With the exception of changing the oil in the car an then going on a long across country road trip scenario, THEN I would go with a 6,000 mile oil change on a Hyundai/Kia. Only with that scenario, otherwise 3,000 to 4,000 miles in my opinion should be the norm. Of course with Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 as the Hyundai/Kia's "best friend". Second best friend is, HPL Engine Cleaner if you are not running VRP.

You will be fine with 5,000 mile oil changes. I had a 2013 KIA Optima and that interval worked for me. I never had a problem. We traded it at 65,000 miles. The owners manual stated 3,750 miles for severe service and 7,500 for normal service. I split the difference.
The Mobil 1 ESP 0W30 is a perfect oil for that engine.

Why couldn’t they have just made it an even 6? 🙄
I’m guessing with the slight residual oil that is left in any engine when changing the oil, a flat 6 will fill to full.

IIRC, the oil capacity listed is for a fresh//dry/totally empty engine. It’s technically the capacity but in reality, 6 is fine.
