I got a little lazy with my mother's 2007 Rav4 and did not check the oil between 3000 and 5000 miles. It never used oil before and I was busy so I let it go. I checked it at 5000 miles because they were going on a trip and I did not have time to change it. I was surprised to find it was down on the dipstick and it took about 3/4 of a quart to get it back to full. Now they come back back from their trip 1000 miles later and I check again and it is low. I drain the oil out and I get about 3.5 quarts (I usually put in 4.5 quarts). I put in Mobil 1 0w20 this time and will let it go 7500 miles, though she just retired so I may have to change it out by time instead of mileage.
I know that 3/4 of a quart in 5000 miles is really nothing but I was surprised none the less because it has never burned an observable amount before. The oils I have used in the past are (mostly) Mobil 1 5w20 regular and EP, Castrol EDGE 5w30 (this was before they had 5w20 edge), and Pennzoil Platinum 5w20. Has anyone else noticed similar consumption when switching between brands of similar oils? I will be keeping an eye on the 0w20 as it is some really thin stuff.
