Pretty nasty, which in this case would be pretty good. Took me about 3 hours to do what takes the oil change guys 15 minutes. The oil in the pan was really black, and showed up dark dark brown on a paper towel. It took about 1.5 hours to get the oil filter off, becase i couldn't get to it, and then didn't have the tools, so i pulled out the screwdriver and mallet. The filter was dirty, and i noticed some clumps of sludge built up on it. 1 down, 2 to go. 2000 left for oil and about 650 left for transmission. SHould be a messy semester.

Noises still seem to be there. I have a lifter/valvetrain noise when i get into boost. It has always been there, but i am hoping that sometime in the next 2K miles it's not there. When my dad gets home i will let him see the oil and see if he wants to run some through the 118K mile maxima we have.

I got the oil container cleaned up, and noticed a lot of sludge settled to the bottom of the container. Glad that it is not in the engine.

Hey that's interesting. Was that from your rinse cycle or the treatment cycle? I just drained out my first treatment cycle. I'll have to check my bottle of the drained ARx oil to see what if anything may have settled.

The filter element for the 1500-mile ARx run was black throughout and when held to a light I could not see light. This is comparable to a 4000 mile run on the previous change. A 1500-mile filter, as I have observed them, typically has a lot of light showing through it.

When were you here and which state?

Funny story there. I was in NSW in Sydney for 1 month back in Nov '02, studying a Macquarie University for a week, spending time seeing the sights, nude beaches(school sponsored trip, and we were required to go to a nude beach), then went to Cairns for three days. While i was there i went diving, and popped a hole in my ear. We were headed back to Sydney for a final week, but i couldn't fly, so i took a bus for 36 hours with no money from Cairns to Sydney. Thank goodness i had 4 granola bars in my backpack.

Anyway, back on topic. I evidently put too much oil in my car, or didn't get all of it out, so i went out to drain it. Got twenty ounces out into a 18" drain pan. the oil was about 1.5 cm deep, and i couldn't see through it. This is after 400 highway miles into the rinse phase.

Still suprising me, and starting to scare me. Glad i went with the bigger filter.
