What was the first modern, mass-produced 24V, DOHC V-6 from a domestic manufacturer? I'm NOT talking customs, show cars, or one-offs....regular production.

I'm thinking it's either the 3.4 24V DOHC V-6 GM put in the Lumina and Monte Carlo Z-34's, or the Taurus SHO 24V V-6...am I right?

Cheers!

The V6 SHO was a Yamaha engine. But it was the first, in '89.

My guess would be the Duratec 2.5 from the Contour...

First year was 1995 for the Duratec 2.5 V6. The Ford Probe had the Mazda KL-DE 24-valve V6 before then...93?

The SHO was a very low volume unit, I'm not sure if it really qualifies under 'mass production'.

As an example Chrysler has made over a million 3.6 pentastars already.

The GM 3.4 was 1990 for the Lumina Z34.. It's gotta be one of the first ones for sure.

I would count the Taurus SHO engine as mass-production. Introduced in 1988?

Follow-up question: What was the first mass-produced V6 in the US?

The Chrysler 3.5 DOHC was not far behind in 1993.

The Chrysler 3.5L was SOHC if I recall correctly.

If the requirement is four camshafts and from an American manifacturer (not Yamaha for example), I think it was the GM 3.4L (the LQ1). It debuted in 1991 in GM's W-body cars, including the Monte Carlo, Cutlass, etc.

the DOHC was used in the
1991–1994 Chevrolet Lumina Z34 and the Euro 3.4 sedan
1991–1996 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme
1991–1996 Pontiac Grand Prix
1995–1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34
1995–1997 Chevrolet Lumina LS
1997 Chevrolet Lumina LTZ

The GM engine was the "Twin Dual Cam" engine.
Almost as clumsy as "Quad OHC",or "Tech 4".

I can't believe it was availiable in the LS.

One would have to special order it in that model. I have never in my life seen a plastic 15" wheel covered, cloth bench front seat, column shift Lumina LS with a DOHC 3.4.

That would be some sleeper. Hey! you in the Maxima...you wanna' run 'em?

Even with all those models, it was still not a widely produced engine. The Z34 models are the only Luminas that only came with the DOHC 3.4 standard. The overwhelming majority of Lumina Euros were 3.1 powered. I think the Cutlass Supreme convertibles might have had the DOHC 3.4 on occasion.

The Mopar 3.5 was a 24-valver, but it was a SOHC. GREAT engine, I owned one a 93 Vision TSi, and that engine ran like new when we sold the car with over 250,000 miles on it.

That would be the 225 Buick odd-fire.

I think the GMC 305 V6 pre-dated it. But that wasn't a car engine. Just pickups and heavy trucks. It was mass-produced though.
