First hand high mileage experience

My dad had a '91 Lincoln Continental (fwd) that he got new, gave to me at 99k and I ran it a few more years to 152k and sold it. My personal record. Lost a head gasket at about 115k, the Ford dealer was surprised they lasted that long. The 3.8 V6 is good for losing head gaskets they said. When they had it apart it was clean a whistle inside. Valvoline AC every 3k.
Not long after that the tranny went. Got a new one put in and drove it a while longer.
'85 Mustang 2.3 that I bought new, had it for 11 years and 125k, no major problems. To this day it's still the most trouble-free car I've ever owned. Valvoline AC every 3k. Other than rusty door bottoms it looked like new in, out, and under the day I sold it.

88 Festiva 168k
88 S10 2.5L Iron duke 150k - Havoline the last 50k clean as whistle under the covers.
89 Corolla 200k aka rust bucket

My dads Festiva has 180k but is fairly varnished even with 2.5-3k oil changes. My mom's 00 Impala with 140k that car was shot. Transmission slipping, power steering leaking. A product of poor maintenance and their current car is going the same route. My dad listens to me about as well as I listened to him growing up.

1995 Ford Ranger, 198,000 miles. Sold it because of worn out synchros in the gearbox (wouldn't go in/out of gear well, despite a relatively new clutch).

Burned no oil, had no engine problems that I was aware of.

The first 55,000 miles, I have no idea. It got Mobil 1 5w-30 tri-synthetic for the next 80k miles (local wal-mart had a sale in 2001 with 5 qts for $13, so I stocked up!). After that, it was mostly Havoline or TropArtic, depending on which was cheaper.

86 Cadillac w/307 V8 160,000 miles Pennzoil 10w30
02 VW Jetta TDI 110,000 miles Delvac 1
24 years TORO snowblower

I put 318,000 miles on my Beretta since bringing it home from the dealer brand new. All those miles were mine, and I used Pennzoil 5W30 and 10W30 exclusively. No exceptions.

Wow, 318 on a Beretta. Nice.

I have 199,952 on my 93 Dodge Spirit. No engine repairs except for a couple of valve cover gaskets.

And I have 123,000 on my 99 Contour, but I put 100,000 of those on in the first five years

1988 Harley daividson FLHS....165,000 miles.

I bought it new and the engine was rebuilt at 148,000 only because I stripped out a cylinder stud. I'm sure it would have gone to 200,000 without my backyard mechanical mishap. It ran 20w-50 dino untill 100,000 then I started to baby it with 15w-20 M1 redcap.

Okay okay so it isn't first hand..

But its credible.

Amazes me that Chrysler doesn't want to cash in on this success. Perhaps they are afraid of being pressured into buying him a new truck.

Last Friday, the Geo Prizm (Toyota Corolla with Chevy Badge and resale) clicked over to 200K miles.

FWIW

Let's see,

1979 Ford Fairmont, 130K
1975 Buick Century, about 125K, it's been 20 years since I owned that car.
1987 Buick LeSabre 130,327 when I sold it
1995 Ford Thunderbird 142,149 when I sold it
1994 Geo Prizm 190,228 and counting

The only ones that had mechanical problems were the Buicks, both had timing chain issues. I junked the Century and repaired the LeSabre as it happened when the LeSabre had 116,850 miles on the clock.

The LeSabre also needed a tranny rebuild at 90,806 miles.

Still, with all of that, it was only about $0.143/mile to drive.

Although uninformed types consider it high mileage, my daily driver is a 1995 Mercedes Benz E320, with 106,000 miles on it. It gets Pennzoil Long Life 15w-40.

My project, a 1989 BMW 325i convertible has an estimtaed 161,000 miles on it (odometer reads 101,000, but that is wrong). It also gets 15w-40, currently Shell Rotella, but only because the place I got an oil filter for it was having a sale on this oil. i plan on trying Delo for the next run.

Both engines feel strong, and I am confident they have many miles left in them. How many? It is my mission to find this out...

I just hit 200,000 on my '94 Grand Prix last night. The first 18k were by a pervious owner. I then ran Pennzoil 5W-30 in until 90k or more on the odometer. Since then it has been Mobil 1 except for the last 2 changes where 1 qt of Castrol Syntec 5W-50 was mixed in with the Mobil 1 5W-30.

1986 Mustang GT-227,000-valve cover gaskets and rear main seal. 1989 Mazda B2200-288,000-2 timing belts and some seals. Mustang had 91,000 when I got it and I used Castrol 10W-30 same as previous owner. Mazda I bought from a Mazda tech had 126,000 and has had only Havoline 5W-30.

My 1998 GMC Yukon has 184,000 on it. I can't decide whether to repower it or see how far I can go on this engine. It's still perfect.
I had a Ford Van with a 300 inch six that had a hair over 300,000 on it and we never took the head off that one.
My old man still drives a 1988 Bronco that we repowered at 225,000 and even though I know that doesn't count, he hasn't spoken to me in three years since I left the family business, so... how much mileage is on that thing now? I bet 350,000. If I see it parked somewhere, I'll peek in and read the odometer.
