I'm kind of "old school" and was taught (many years back) that the first oil change on a new vehicle should always be earlier than the manufacturer's recommendation. That being said, if I plan on using dino every 5K on my new '09 Honda CR-V (even if the MM says I'm still okay) should I do my first change at 3K or is that a total waste of time and money?

This seems to be more of a religious issue for a lot of folks. Personally, I never let the factory fill go longer than about 1000 miles before I switch over to synthetic. This has served me well over the years, but YMMV.

I'm sure some will chime in that Honda has a magical factory fill full of Moly, but I would agree with you that an early drain will get rid of some contaminates too small for the filter. So it's not a waste, just a decision between those two.

FWIW, that sounds like a reasonable plan. Personally, I go the full MM on whatever synthetic I can get a rebate on. It costs less and is less work. FWIW, you could easily go the full MM on most conventionals.

Nope. Any other vehicle on the planet ...YES. Do it in a Honda and you risk death from above as paid Ninja mercenaries descend upon you for violating the sacred process handed down by monks from pre-feudal Japan. It will make Kill Bill look like Romparoom.

Make your own decisions ..but don't say they were uninformed decisions.

Apparently they slather up the internals with generous amounts of moly for the run in process. It's served them very well for owners to follow the OEM recommendation.

I've never seen any evidence either way about this. The bottom line seems to be that it doesn't really matter, as long as you change it within factory specs.

Changing the FF early seems to be a "feel good" move, do it if it makes you feel good. One thing I do believe is that it can't hurt to change it early.

im thinking of doing the same thing on my new camry 4cyl.

3000mi on ff
5000mi on mobil clean 5000 or motorcraft semisyn (both 20 weight)

On my tC I changed out the FF at 2500 miles(a mix of light to heavy/hard driving, meaning high speed on the highway in bursts). At 2500 miles, I dumped FF, dealer had the free oil changes(3 for new owners). Ran 2nd fill to 5k(total miles). And then go normal intervals with Dino(3k) up to 10k. At 10k I switched to Synthetic.
