OK, well, it was a joint effort between Total Seal and Southwest Research Institute, but... pretty interesting results. Who would have thought that a higher friction level did NOT equate to more wear, necessarily?


 
Special coatings (like those rings) are part of the "design tricks" used to reduce wear, and also be able to run lower viscosity oils (like 0W-8 and 0W-16). And of course the AF/AW add pack is also improved to mitigate friction and wear (the tribofilm strength) when the film thickness (MOFT) from viscosity goes near or to zero into the mixed and the boundry lubrication realms. Piston rings seem to wear faster than any other engine component, so not surprised that R&D continues like the SwRI testing.
