Filter media torn at 3117 miles

I took my oil filter off my Toyota today. Was just going to change the filter at the 3117 mile mark. I put this filter on at 02/22/05 when I did the oil change. Have 0w 40 M1 in the motor and was going to go 6 or 7 k before oil change.

When I cut the lower end Premium Plus open I found a pleat had torn just above the glue line on the steel cap bottom end. It was a pleat right next to the full glued pleat where the media comes together. There was not any media distortion at all. The media looked real good other than this issue.

I only noticed it under a very bright light. Almost did not see the tear. As it does not standout. But thanks to Lubeowners posts I now looked this area over very carefully.

I normally use the higher end Pureone filters and have for many years. But they were out of the Pureone filters last time I bought a filter. Hence the premium plus.

Sorry don't have a pic my camera is overseas with my son.

Any chance of you saving that filter in a plastic bag 'til your son comes home? How 'bout a friendly neighbor with a digital camera to lend? Oop! Never mind. Best leave this type of distraction to the anonomous internet. You never know what rumors can flash through the neighborhood with the discovery that you cut open your oil filters and perhaps have an oil shrine.

Good one Gary!

I'm really starting to consider adding a by-pass oil filter to my vehicle. I mean, if I have been careful in my choosing of full flow oil filters, there's still the simple fact of the unknown, such as in this case with Hirev. Others such as Lubeowner and some mixed reports...perhaps the engines are putting up with more than many believe. I suppose a particle count would be the only PASSIVE way to really tell, along with the standard oil analysis.

Perhaps I'm fretting, but in some remote sense, if not to hit the point of this whole exercise for myself which can get clouded by all the unknowns and comparative findings and chance circumstances among many variables...is to simply improve oil filtration for the sake of machinery and even perhaps oil longevity.

The examples and facts are out there, but it's a matter of doing the research, making the choice(s) and taking that step.

Interesting.

Hirev:

Do you do oil anylsis? Do you still have some of the oil to send in for anaylsis purposes?

And, as people tend to give me the mickey about this, call the Purolator number posted in the top thread..and tell them what you've found. Hopefully, they will request the filter back. ( And if you do still have some of the oil, offer to send some of that back as well.) They should pay for the cost to return...

LOL, a neighbor caught me cutting open a filter years ago. I started to explain but he look at me like I was nuts.

No, Never have on this truck. The oil was put in a container that had other used oils in it.

I guess I wonder what good it will do? Motor runs fine. The motor has 131 K on it now it might not have done it any good in the long run. But I can not see it having a problem real soon. At least I hope so.

I put some Mobil T&S 5w 40 in for this run with a Wix filter. I have always had a mix of Wix and Purolator oil filters on this truck. I will probably use a Purolator oil filter again but I will stick to the higher end Pureone from now on.

Found another one! This was not from my car, but one that I maintain. The Carquest filter B85334 I purcased a couple years ago and used last year has media torn from the end caps in several places. It was in use 11000 km, and one year, with lots of short trips. The engine still sounds fine. The filter had a spring type bypass, which looks to be in working order. The media is warped, collapsed in a couple spots, and torn. Maybe the moiture from the shor trips did in this low-end brand. I paid for a Carquest Premium, but they gave me this one and I didn't know any better.

I'm starting to think about those Fram XG filters with the steel mesh backed media.

This is from my car:
image of used Supertech 3593A oil filter media, after 8600 miles total. Note slight separation of media from glue. One spot, I tore it myself with a screwdriver.

The separation only occurred where the pleats were widely spaced. Better quality control in keeping the pleat separation uniformly spaced would likely cure this problem.

This surely looks like it has been in service too long. The distortions would indicate moisture to me. Is this a short trip vehicle ..or did the OCI span a couple of seasons ...or both

Yes, lots of short trips, in winter. But if winter moisture caused the failure, it probably happened during the first 5500 km of driving since it was installed in the fall. Oil was QS winter 5w30, then Pennzoil 5w30, keeping the filter in place for the PZ. The pleats were also spaced too widely to give any strength. You can see where the media was glued in, that the sheets of paper were expected to survive 15 psi bypass pressure at a 45 degree angle in some places. I kind of like the design of the Pure 1, where the pleats are so close together that they push against eachother when the pressure gets too high and it goes into bypass. Antifreeze level remained steady, but I'm watching it carefully now.

A Honda Civic could be subject to this exact regimen, if a person drives 11,000 km a year. The manual specifies changing oil every 16,000 km or 6 mo, and filter every 2nd change.

I'm not sure where your "Southpark" location is - in relations to weather/varying climates, but I do know that today is 11-22-07 & your inexpensive filter has been in service almost two years (02-22-05).

Buy a better filter for that length of use.
