My new Subaru calls for a maximum 3750 mile/4month OCI because of the turbo. I'm going to use 5w40 Rotella in this car...plan on changing the oil next week (it will have right around 1k miles on it then).

I've got a Wix dealer local to me, and I know they are a good filter and I run them on my other Subaru with 10k OCIs with very good results. Wix are obviously easy for me to get, but I can also get about any oil filter out there fairly easy as I have every major parts house within a 10 minute drive.

Is it worth looking for another filter brand (with better filtration) for a short OCI such as this?? I'm thinking the oil should be able to handle the limited amount of "dirt" that would be introduced during this short OCI??

Thoughts? Its going to be VERY hard to start changing oil at under 10k miles...

Forester XT...they had a nice used 2008 STI sitting in the showroom, but at $30k, they can keep it.

That's what I'm asking, is there a better filter to catch finer particles, or is it even an issue with the short change intervals??

If you want to spend a little less, but not compromise the quality construction of the Wix filter, go to your NAPA store and get a filter from their ProSelect line.

They're built by Wix to NAPA's standards, and are usually priced from $3 - $4.

The price difference isn't a real concern...and its Napa ProGold isn't it? I thought the ProSelect were Autozone or another?

I'm just trying to prolong the turbo life in this car...synthetic oil to take the extra heat and a good filter for particles.

I believe when I looked it up, the filter list for the Forester is 19u nominal, and a smaller filter can than my Outback takes (also 19u nominal). I think it had a better beta ratio though??

2/20=15/22 for the Forester's 51365...2/20=22/40 for the Outback's 51334. I get confused on the beta ratios every time...but I beleive the 51365 is a better filter even though its physically smaller??

Napa Gold is identical to the Wix filter. NG just has the Napa logo on it is the only difference. It's one of the very best filters you can buy.

+1 on the ProSelect. Its construction is similar to the NG and is made by Wix for Napa to Napa's specs. It has a nitrile ADBV, and for your 3750 oci it will do just fine and cost less too.

Both NG and ProSelect are excellent filters and both are built like a tank. I use ProSelects on my truck and follow a 3000 mile OCI. I have never had a single problem with the ProSelect. IMO it's the best filter in its price range.

Deeter-

The NAPA Gold is the same filter as the Wix. No difference except the sticker on the can, and the printing on the box.

The NAPA ProSelect is NAPA's standard grade filter. It's competition would be the Purolator Premium Plus, and the F**m orange can to mention a couple.

The NAPA ProSelect is built by Wix. Main differences are a standard black nitrile anti drain back valve (instead of silicone), and the filter media is a straight paper construction (instead of a glass enhanced media). Everything else is the same. That's the difference in the ProSelect.

The ProSelect is an excellent choice for shorter OCI's, and costs a few bucks less. I use it myself with total confidence. I have two in use right now.

Either way, you'd win. You'll just save a few bucks with one without giving up anything since you're looking at a short OCI.

OK, its been a while since I was at a Napa...as in several years.

I knew the Napa Golds were made by Wix, but the ProSelect line was not available when I was researching filters for another project. All I was ever offered around these parts was the Napa Gold.

I don't mind spending a few more $$ on a better filter...I'm not sure how well the turbo likes having abrasives ran across its bearing surface. This is my first gasser turbo, and I want it to be as trouble free as I can make it...

I think you may be able to get the better NAPA Golds filters (case lots) at an inexpensive price here:

http://www.fleetfilter.com/ => BITOG sponser!

Try sourcing the WIX filter number for your application and see. Given your OCI and preference for NAPA Gold this should work out very well for you.
