Filter decisions... again

Alright guys. After looking at my finances and looking at this from a business perspective (the reason I'm even in a Honda) I need a filter under $5. I can't seem to justify the much higher cost of P1's and Wix's when Honda last 200K+ on Jiffy lube filters and being neglected. I'm following my car's Oil Life Meter system. Figure the OCI will be 7,500-8,500 miles. It's for the L1610 application. I've come up with:

White purolator $4.49
STP @ Autozone $4.49
Valucraft @ AZ $2.49
SuperTech @WM $???? Gotta look this weekend
Motorcraft @WM $???? .......................

Looking for the best filter, or bang for the buck. One thing about the Purolators I've always wondered about was the Bypass valve. It looks like a piece of hard fake wood that seals against the metal cap. I was on the net and found my application # ST cut open and the Bypass was rubber for a good seal. I don't know anything about the STP's or Valucrafts.

If not, do the calculations for an Amsoil EaO filter cost per mile/1 year and see if it's cheaper.

The cheapo valucraft is actually made by Champion Labs and is a decent filter.

Assuming a $2.00 differential between the PClassic and The POne.


That would be about a $ .00027 per mile savings. I'd spend the $2.00 and get the Pure One and follow the OLM.

Not trying to sound elitist or anything thats just my 2 cents. take it FWIW.

I'm happy with the STP filters. I've used Supertech but for my application it was much smaller than the STP or the AC Delco.

I used to use Purolators but the store I got them at closed, so now I pretty much always go to Autozone.

Motorcraft is a good filter and costs $3.xx at WM.

the Pentius brand are cheap at CSK/O'Reilleys. they usually have them behind the counter.

ProSelect is a great choice for a low-cost filter. The one for my gf's '03 Accord is about $3.50 here. IMHO ProSelect is the best low-cost filter available.

Likely the ST, STP, and Value Craft are all Champ and much alike inside.

Motorcraft and Purolator are both made by Bosch. Some of your money will make it back to Germany. Ford holds their feet to fire and won't permit the metal to metal dome end bypass in a Motorcraft. I would never use a white Purolator if I could get a Motorcraft for the same or less.

Me, a Motorcraft this time, an ST or VC next time. Cut them both open afterwards and decide if the MC is worth the extra dollar.

Not sure what Purolator you were looking at, but your description of the bypass vavle doesn't sound like what I've seen. IMO, Purolator's have a decent sized and desing of the bypass valve.

The "best bang for the buck" is a Purolator - even better with the rebate going until 10/31/09. Is it really worth saving $2 per filter when you consider how much gas money you spend. The cost per mile of a $5 filter over 8K miles is peanuts.

I cut open a Motorcraft FL-822 (I posted a thread on this site showing photos), and it had the same dome end bypass valve as in the Purolators. Not all Motorcraft filters use the base end bypass valve design.

I have to see if wal-mart lists a FoMoco for my Accord. If it does bada bing baby. If not... Gotta maybe get some P1's on rebate or sale. I didn't know Purolator had rebates on their filters. when did this happen?

What year model is the Honda. ST #7317 fits many in the Honda line. It is not Ecore, metal center tube and endcaps. IMO, 7.5-8k might be a tad of a stretch, but others have run double OCI's on a Honda with ST's here and posted pics about it.

My choice would be Pure One though. If you don't want to go the Amazon route, if you have an Advance Auto nearby, use one of those $10 coopins on a $25 purchase (on promo board) and the rebate form.

Check out the AcDelcos if they have them. Most of them are decent filters for 4 bucks.

Walmart ST, STP, and now AC Delco, per my inspections today, are all now Champion Ecores. Good filters but the Walmart ST is only $2.50. The others are charging a premium for name, they are identical. If a Motorcraft filter works for you application that is the way I would go for a buck and change more. MCs are great filters. But for $2.50 the Walmart ST Ecore is a great buy.
