Filter changes during the break-in period

I’ve been changing oil since about age 12, and I’ve never changed the oil and left a dirty filter. I understand it’s a cost thing where one is doing interval changes. But why not just eat the cost of a filter and use a new one with new oil? Are there nutrients in the old filter?

I just bought 12 then 7 PF63 at $4.54 each. So I’m sitting on 18 new filters. I don’t like to waste either, but $4.54 I’m ok with. Even twice that. My .02 ymmv

Oil filters don't really care about time, only mileage which is how they become loaded with debris. So if the filter is ran a short time then it's not being utilized very well. Yeah, there is some old oil left in the filter and galleries if left in place, but if someone is changing oil often then the oil probably isn't close to full utilization either. I've ran oil filters twice in a few cases like that.

Context: I have a new vehicle, Honda Ridgeline with a J35y8 NA GDI engine, and I changed the oil out at around 600 miles. I also changed the stock Honda filter to a Purolator Boss at that time. I plan on changing the oil 2 more times before the free dealer-provided service: once at 1,500 and again at 3000.

Question: Would you personally find it worth the cost and effort to change the oil filter during either of those two planned oil changes given that the engine is still breaking in and probably shedding metallic wear particles? Cost is less the issue than effort - anyone who's changed the oil filter on their Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline or Odyssey knows how annoying it is. I am committed to doing these early oil changes, though, and if wimping out on changing the oil filter would nullify those benefits then I'll do it.
Well, it’s up to you what you wanna do. But here’s what I do with new vehicle.

I change engine oil and filter within the first 500 miles. I changed differential fluid within the first 500 miles.
And then change the oil and filter again when the odometer is at 2500 miles
And then continue with a 5K oil change interval

I’m right there with you, changing the engine oil and not the filter is kind of like taking a shower and then putting dirty underwear on

Just wanted to give an update - I had been running the Pentius filter with Valvoline EP 0w-20 for a couple thousand miles and everything was good. Went to the dealership for the free oil change and tire rotation and immediately took a 4 hour roadtrip. Things seemed fine until the last 30 minutes or so, whereupon I noticed a drop in fuel economy and the truck took a lot more revs to accelerate from a stop than it used to.

I took a look at the undercarriage. Even though the maintenance minder didn't call for a new oil filter, they swapped out the old Pentius with a Honda one anyway, and I suspected that was the cause. I changed it out for another Pentius today and noticed that the engine doesn't have to work so hard to get up to speed anymore. Will report back with findings about fuel economy.
That’s a mystery, but supports that Honda dealers don’t follow the leave the oil filter on twice advice. Twice is not required, just acceptable. Or maybe they don’t allow a vehicle to leave with a Pentius oil filter when they are responsible for the oil change.

Why change the BOSS now? You'll never see or feel the difference going to a different filter. But you will know the Boss won't tear, leak past the bypass valve and is built real tough.
