How often does everyone change their oil filters? I was raised on the 3k/5k miles for oil, oil filter and chassis grease and take that time to check out the air filter and generally poke around your car. But it seems with these fancy new oils and engines people are running up to 10k miles for OCI, in fact I know a lot of new Fords say 10,000 miles, once a year or when the car info screen says oil change due as OEM specs on the OCI without mention of changing filters in between.

What I'm getting at is this... assuming one runs a good filter (specifically I am referring to the Bosch 3410 or the MC FL820S) would it be reasonable to run filters for 2 OCI to pinch a few pennies or does this introduce unnecessary risk?

Depends on how clean the engine is inside. If the engine doesn't have sludge problems and is clean inside, then running a good filter to 10K shouldn't be a problem.

20K miles but that's with 3 OCI's and 12 months on an OVERSIZED oil filter. These Honda engines are spotless.

Honda recommends 20K miles on 2 OCI's with a much smaller oil filter.

I'm with Clevy and LT4_Vette, I re-use oil filter in my LS400 when I use dino at 7-8k OCI. With syn I do 12-15k OCI with 1 oil filter.

EVERY OIL CHANGE!

The same interval as the oil change. With all the deals that include the filter there's no reason not to change it every time.

I'm sure I will be grilled very badly for my reply. But, it's like a bad dream, they will get over it.

Im running my Amsoil EAO11 for three changes. Probably 6000-6500 each. Its on the second run right now. Hasnt been removed to drain or anything.

Generally, yes, you can go 2 OCIs on a good quality filter. The justification of >1 OCI per filter shouldn't be about money, but instead, should be about necessity. Having said that, most quality filters can handle 10-15k miles fairly easily. The frequency of filter changes should also depend on miles on oil and warranty requirements.

Edit: never mind the last sentence. The vehicle in your sig don't have any warranty left.

Filters are cheap. Engines are not.

Haven't heard any real compelling reasons to extend the filter interval, sounds like it would be just fine to skip the change once in a while if I dont have it on hand though.

Money isn't the issue. Buying new parts isn't automatically better.

I agree with the principle that a moderately worn filter is probably more effective than a new one. Where the optimal age is, I don't know.

However, what I worry about most on oil filters is catastrophic failure. There are enough anecdotes and a first-hand incident to make me believe it's not rare. Most failures would not be noticed by the owner unless they cut it open.
I'm of the belief that the risk of failure increases with mileage. Therefore I'm uneasy with pushing near the advertised mileage rating of a filter. I don't trust their QC enough.

I could reuse a long life filter if it was still young. If I did that I'd want to drain it first to get the old oil out. I'm not convinced that there's any significant risk of a leak from reinstalling it. If it does leak, then I'd change it, no big deal.

Just about any filter will structurally handle longer intervals without issue IMO, unless your engine is filthy. But leaving the filter on is essentially the same as topping of your new oil change with dirty, depleted oil. I no longer leave filters on for this reason.

Your reply just proves that you are loaded!

He is right. So why are you trying to belittle his response?
