Filter change halfway through?

I have a Subaru WRX and am running the Mobil 1 10w30 synthetic with a purolator pl14460 filter. I am running the oil approximately 5000 miles before I change it. Would changing only the filter at 2500 provide any additional benefit due to the slightly long run time? The engine has been modified with Cobb stage II tuning and makes about 290hp/290 ft lbs. at the crank in the blazing Florida heat. Thanks for the replies!
 
IMO, absolutely no difference. I did my own test a year ago on one vehicle, 11,000 miles OCi on one I changed the filter half way through the other time same filter for all 11,000 miles. UOA was basically the same.

IMO you would be spending needless money and effort to change with such a short OCI of 5000 miles

Save your money. It won't make a difference in a 5,000 mile OCI as Spector said. With the money you save you can buy 2 gallons of gas

That is a good point, however you'd also hear more startup noise when your ADBV stops working properly, so someone would then know it's time to change that filter.
 
1. 5,000 miles isn't a long service cycle for filters -- almost all are now designed for 7,500 non-Severe Service.

2. Many manuals now call for filter changes at every OTHER oil service, meaning that up to 15,000 mi filter service is feasible for some folks (not that I'd ever consider it).

3. 5,000 miles shouldn't be particularly tough for most ADBVs, in my opinion, especially if they're designed for at least 7,500 mi.

4. By all evidence, filters simply don't clog within a few thousand miles. It simply doesn't happen except for defects, needed engine repairs, or possibly in Severe Service.

5. On the other hand, oil routinely collects 10 micron particles and smaller which are too small to filter out. (The smallest filter pores per the Mercruiser study were 10 microns.) So, if I was forced to pick one or the other for more frequent changes, I'd change out the OIL more frequently, rather than the FILTER (which is never likely to clog anyway).

I honestly don't believe those 10 micron particles cause very much wear in the engine though. I use K&N oil filters in my cars, and the K&N is basically a 20 micron filter. So it allows a lot of those 10 micron particles to flow freely through my engines. But yet my last two used oil analysis posted showed very low wear numbers. So obviously those 10 micron particles don't seem to be doing me harm.
 
It almost makes you wonder just how critical the filter is doesn't it. The automakers seem to be using smaller and smaller filters. Some of them look like they belong on a motorcycle.

Just an unfounded opinion, but I truly doubt that you need to worry about changing the filter part way through until you have gone somewhere past 10,000 miles, and that is further than I think I will ever leave oil in an engine.

That could very well be if you're seeing good UOA numbers. (Congratulations -- you're clearly making some good maintenance decisions!) But, for the record, the 1988 AC Delco/Detroit Diesel SAE study concluded that "Particles from 2-22 microns are most likely to cause damage" and that "Controlling the abrasive contaminants in the range of 2-22 microns in the lube oil is necessary for controlling engine wear."

Keep in mind that total media area is the key number -- some newer Subaru filters, for example, have surprisingly good media area in spite of their petite size. Evidently a whole lotta pleats goin' on. More pleats than notches on Britney Spear's headboard.

The running clearance on the loaded side of your main bearings is less than 10 microns. A good filter could make the difference between a hosed bearing and a little scarring if some crud does get in the oil.

I'll join the chorous too. Next oil change, cut your filter open and take a look at the element. Unless you engine is disintegrating

One more voice in the chorus, a mid-interval filter change at 2,500 miles would be a waste of time and money. Just use a high quality filter from the get go. If you are concerned about hardening ADBVs, use a filter with a silicon rubber ADBV like the PureOne or a Wix.

Would the ADBV make any difference at all in the EJ2xx motors? The filter is inverted at the bottom of the block next to the sump.
 
Just change the oil filter when you change the oil at 5000 miles. I would not go over 7000 myself. I still change mine every 3000-4000 miles which many consider to frequint.

There is no ADBV in the Purolator 14460!!! It doesn't need one because the engine is designed so that the filter mounts the way G-d intended.
