Filler Neck Trouble

Fuel filler neck on the Ranger is rotted out, leaking, and has thrown a code. Parts stores want about $170 for the filler neck. Ford Dealer (called 2) wants $427

. This is a metal tube about 14 inches long with a second vent tube along side it, and a flange for mounting. A local scrap yard would let me pull on myself for under $10 but has no stock on this part. Only answer is to go for the cheapest on the web, which is $69 with free shipping. I wonder if the evap leak that threw the code is also responsible for the spark knock under hard acceleration?
 
No. Local scrapyard wanted $75 but was out of stock and this one place the parts counter guy tipped me off on was under $10 but also out of stock. I could pull it and re-finish it, but probaby woudl not last.
 
Which "evap". If the vapor recovery system is fouled up it can lean the mixture. Usually troublesome parts show up as hard to find on the "used market".
 
Check Craigslist and see if someone is parting one out.

I went through this with my Explorer. All of the filler necks in Pull-A-Part were hacked up, so I ended up getting one from a guy on Explorer Forum and having it shipped to me.
 
I just remember the code was for a small leak, which would match to the filler neck is wet with fuel on the outside but not dripping when I fill the tank. Cheapest on net is Fillernecksupply.com.
 
Rust in the filler neck could cause that code, and if the rust is that bad I would go ahead and replace it now. It will get worse, my Explorer dripped gas from the filler neck.

If that doesn't fix your code, check all of the vacuum lines associated with the EVAP system. Find the EVAP purge valve under the hood and follow all of the lines coming off of it. I had a "check fuel cap" light and code for an EVAP leak that turned out to be a single loose vacuum line coming from the purge valve.
 
FWIW I sell a ton of those hoses. The Rangers fail smog here when they pressurize the EVAP system and those filler necks start leaking.

Personally I would not get a junkyard one, it will most likely have the same problem as yours.
 
Brand new one is shipping out today for $69.95 and free shipping.

I am stunned that the dealer would charge $427! Surely a Ford Focus would cost over $100,000 if you bought it in parts from the dealer.

While you have to allow the dealership overhead and handling to sell you parts, but they really should be there to help the customer, not milk them for all it's worth. I bet that filler neck cost all of $5 or $10 per car to the manufacturer.

The other thing is they have many different filler necks. Some have different sized vent tube, some have an internal vent tube. I sure am glad I don't have the internal vent tube as that would be a BEAR to install.

They are giving you a discount actually, MSRP is $485.34 on that. That thing used to only be around $120 until California put in the new pressurized smog check on 95 and older vehicles basically trapping Ranger owners into buying the filler necks. Also the new neck from Ford uses a different gas cap.

This is pretty much the most expensive of the conventional filler necks. Even the new capless fill necks are cheaper.
 
Look on the bright side, at least you still had options. Nissan discontinued the filler neck (and the gas tank) for my wife's '99 Sentra. Both were leaking. No aftermarket part support on either of those parts.

A scrapyard 100 miles from here was able to order a reman filler neck from somewhere and I had to have a gas tank freighted in from Texas.

Someone priced the parts for the whole car some years ago, the cost of parts alone is about 5-6 times the cost of the new car.
 
Before I would pay $427 I would find the cheapest one that had the size I need on the main tube and do what I could to rig it to fit.

Even so the actual wholesale price of that unit is probably a tiny fraction of that price!

Not only that but the car makers are loosing sales of that part that could generate quite a bit more revenue if they priced it more honestly, instead customers stay away in droves. I bet Ford has pallets of these filler necks sitting collecting dust today because of the outrageous price. I'm sure the same is true for many other car makers. Of course the other fallout from this kind of gouging is that it makes the customer angry with the brand as well. Not a good way to get in the good graces of a potential new car buyer.
 
Ford's supply of the filler necks may be limited. They might not be making them anymore, but still have a supply to take care of warranty claims. Maybe they priced it high to keep people from buying the part for non-warranty repairs?

I actually have worked for tier one OEM suppliers that make things like this. What you say is possible but not likely in my view. My guess is that they have literally tens of thousands of these pieces on hand which is usually run with new car part production. They always overrun with mass produced vehicles like the Ranger, especially because of the popularity of fleet usage. I'd eat my hat if they didn't have enough of these to supply every current ranger owner with several of them. LOL
 
Ford currently has 386 of those filler necks in their warehouses across the country not including the inventory in dealers. That part number is too good of a seller to go away anytime soon.
