Filler Neck Trouble

The O2 feedback system controls part throttle, and the pre programming in the computer controls full throttle mixture.

So the filler neck MAY have influence.

Rich runs cooler [it's the ONLY reason for rich/lean knock differences], but going a bit lean is not always going to produce spark knock. Many power programmers for chips and computers are leaner than the factory.

Anyways, you need that filler fixed for a bunch of other reasons!

The odd coincidence. My son bought a 2001 S10 pickup in April and the previous owner had a code from the filler neck leaking so he replaced it before selling the truck. My ranger is a 2001 and threw the code about the same time as my son bought the S10.

Wow, these guys are fantastic: This is the one I ordered.
Ordered Monday morning and it was at my door today, 2 days later, free shipping all the way from the state of Washington to Detroit, Michigan. It fit perfectly, was exactly the same as the old filler neck, and the old gas cap fits. I R&R'd it in less than 30 minute. Filled the tank and did a test drive several miles. No leakage. $69.95 instead of $170 locally.

Now to turn off the check engine light. If it doesn't go out on it's own I will have to disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, which is supposed to reset the engine check light.

Have the same issue on my 97 Ranger. Am putting off repairing it because of the time to drop the tank or pull the bed off. I just am not filling all the way.

TallPaul, how did you install it so fast? A;lo what year Ranger?

Ahh..link is to 2001-2003. Price is up to $90 now.

Don't disconnect the battery. Let it go out on its own. It will within few drive cycles as long as your gas level is between 3/4 and 1/4

Ahh..link is to 2001-2003. Price is up to $90 now.
2001 Ranger styleside (not flare). No need to drop tank or pull bed for fuel filler neck so long as the hoses are good. Just lay under edge, be sure to close your eyes when you wring the hoses off the tube. I had a lot of rust flakes flying. I stuck a screw driver under the hose edge and worked it around to loosen it. Could try what I did on daughters bicycle to get hand grips off, stuck awl under grip, ran spray oil tube up next to it and squirted. Grip twisted off easy.

$90 woah! Guess I got mine just in time!

Thanks, I can give it a try. I'll keep it above half tank. On the other hand, a refresh of the computer might not be a bad idea after driving 6 months on a check engine light.

Now here is the odd thing. The seller has this warning:

attn! a ground strap must be added to this filler neck when installing on STEP SIDE, AND FLAIR SIDE BEDS!


I could see it for the step side as the fenders may be fiberglass, but my fenders are metal and my old filler neck did NOT have a ground strap. At this time the ground strap is not hooked up. I can do it, but it will be to a rusty frame.

Thanks for the tip. I think I am going to have to pull the bed. The 97 has a different filler neck that is longer. Every thread that I read about my year truck says to either pull the bed or drop the tank because there is no access to where the filler neck connects to the tank.

Look up under there first with your flashlight and make sure. But the filter site shows your year as having that funky vent tube inside the main tube. My motorhome had that and I had to take it to a shop for replacement of the outer hose. That is too bad. Why can't they keep it simple??????

Well I tried to find a leak in the old filler neck and couldn't. Even put the old cap on and submerged it then plugged the big tube and blew into the small one. Must be a very slow leak. Had the engine light turned off at O'Reillys so hope it stays off now. At least the fuel smell is gone.

If you can smell fuel, it is enough of a leak to throw an EVAP system code.

Video of filler neck replacement, except I did not use a cutting wheel on a drill to cut throught the hose clamps. I used a screwdriver to loosen and re-use the clamps. My filler was not as badly rusted as this guy's was.

I think I looked at that video before when I first had a leak. Mine is a one piece neck and is longer....no way I am going to be able to do it without pulling the bed.

Based on the pics I have seen my leak is at the bend in teh neck right before teh tank...must be at the top because it only leaks on the ground if I fill the tank completely. If I just do 3/4 tanks no leaks.

I have no codes being thrown........

My motorhome had a leak where the hose attaches to the tank, just wedged up above the frame. I could get at it but gave up after pulling the hose from the filler neck and a smaller hose inside was preventing me from pulling it off. I paid $85 for a remnant gasoline proof hose from a supplier in Livonia MI, but ended up having my mechanic install it.
