There is a local chain of grocery stores here that has a deal with a local chain of gas stations: If you scan your "bonus" card every time you buy groceries, each time you spend $50 you can get 5 cents off per gallon at the gas station. And the savings is cumulative for up to three months. I hadn't used mine since signing up awhile back, so I thought I'd give it a go today and see how much I would save. I was surprised when I swiped my grocery card at the pump and it said I would get 75 cents off per gallon, and then the price on the pump dropped from 287.9 to 212.9! Not bad. First time I've filled up the van for less than $30 in a long time.

Similar deal available from a grocery chain here, only its 10 cents off per gallon for each $50, instead of 5 cents. Same time limit (3 months).

Come on up to the great white north! $4.55 per US gallon. Made a trip across the border to Bellingham WA yesterday and filled up for "only" $3.249.

Nice score G. Doesn't hurt either that SC starts at a lower price point (taxes) than many/most states. On my way to Atlanta always make sure I fill up in SC, going and return. Prices always lower than Ga. and NC.

Our brilliant legislature is talking about raising our gas taxes.

Right now we are at $3.14 for regular unleaded. A local grocery chain up here has this type of deal with the local BP stations, .$10 per gallon for every $50 purchased in the store. But your card expires at the end of every month. Starting next month it is going to drop down to $.05 for every $50 purchased.

For the past six months, every time my wife shopped at that store, we would also buy a $50 BP gift card. That plus the groceries would usually get us between $.40 and $.60 off per gallon per month. Not a bad deal.

I forgot about that! One of things I enjoyed when I was at Princeton.

We have that food/gas thing at a grocery chain here (shaws) but I can't spend the minimum required per receipt/week, I think it's $50. They have loss leader sales on stuff but all the regular price stuff is 50-100% more than I can get elsewhere. They'll have a sale on hamburger but buns will be like $4!

They also give a free turkey if you spend $300 between labor day and thanksgiving; I'll just spend the $.49 a pound to get one the regular way.

Is there a limit to how much gas you can fill up with the discounted rate? What's to prevent someone from bringing in their RV with dual fuel tanks?

here, it's 4c per L off - but does not accumulate. you only get to use a receipt once. but 4c per L is more than 5c per Gallon.

you have to spend more than $30 to get the voucher and it expires in 4 weeks, and you can only use one per fill up - up to 150 L (almost 40 gallons).

very bad for competition in the grocery and fuel market, and really hurts small fuel stations.

if you shop at this store, you pay for the fuel subsidy, so you better make use of it for fuel. likewise, if you buy the fuel , you better shop at the grocery store in question otherwise you are being overcharged for fuel. Can you see how deals like this limit competition and make you stick to the single brand?

Yes, twenty gallons. Neither of my vehicles have a tank that big.

Supposedly it's for "safety" that only qualified "petroleum transfer engineers" can perform fuel-ups

I paid $2.95 to fill up at a BP in Indiana on Saturday (and they were out of the "Thank you" cards, glad to see everyone who claimed they were going to boycott BP stuck to their word....LOL) and was thrilled because gas by me is ranging from $3.20-$3.25.
