I found two Toro Personal Pace on Craigslist, but he's set on buying a new one.

Just go pick one up, wash and wax it, and tell him it`s new? I know, I`m an idiot.

I'm just glad I could direct him to something "good", since everyone is making a lawn mower these days. I look at it this way, its his money to spend how he wants...if he wants a new mower, more power to him. Personally, I'm with you...buy a slightly used one for less than half of retail.

I did offer to service it in the spring each year, to at least help him out.

One a side note, I was talking with him last night and he stated the main thing he absolutely hated about the Craftsman (the one that's dead) is the fact it had NO DRAIN PLUG...you had to flip it upside down and drain the oil through the filler!

I have yet to come across a walk mower engine that did not have a drain for the crankcase. However the oems design the crankcase to drain out the dipstick tube when tipped to the dipstick side. The only engine with the dipstick and carb on the same side that I know of is the fc150v Kawi.

I can verify what he was saying...I looked at it last night and there is no drain anywhere, not even hidden under the deck.

The reason he hated it was that, unless you ran all the gas out of the tank, you would get gasoline everywhere.

Tip that briggs engine 90degrees to the left only. 95% of the oil will drain from there. No need to go upside down. Odd about the drain plug, but there are hundreds of variations of that engine.

The B&S I had on my old Murray had a drain plug in the bottom, but it was seized shut, so was no good anyway. Most of the Hondas don't have drain plugs at all. The oil filler should be opposite the carburetor, so fuel shouldn't spill when draining the oil. I change my mowers' oil twice a year, and never have any issues with fuel spilling.

I bought a Honda at Home Depot. It was the biggest piece of s*** I ever spent money on. After fighting problem for several years I got rid of it and got a Toro Personel Pace that is far and away a better quality mower in every way. The stupid key start option does not work very well though.

I also recommend the Toro mowers. I have a 5 year old SR4 and love it. It does have a drain plug, but the blade clutch blocks it. I tip it on it's side to drain the oil. Gas never drips out while doing this. The mower mulches great too!

I know that HF has a 6.5 horizontal shaft engine, but I haven't heard of them having a vertical shaft one. A person can also look online at the Sears Outlet section for your area. They usually have some good discounts on floor models and the like.

My 6.75HP Craftsman has the drain plug under the deck near the blade shaft, though if I remember correctly, the owners manual did say to tip the whole unit and drain from the filler. Don't know why; always used the drain plug.
