Fiat 124 Spider oil weight

Just purchased a 2019 Spider Lusso, which just turned 1,000 miles and I want to do an oil change. Factory fill is 5W40 full syn. I have Mobil 1 European car formula 0W40. Anyone have thoughts on the wisdom of this? Car will be used through a New England winter.

Answered my own question; MS-12991.

Pennzoil Platinum Euro and Valvoline MST would be your easiest to find options.

Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 will probably have specific MS-12991 as PP is oficial supplier to FCA.
Other really, really good oils that will works:
Castrol Edge 0W40
Mobil1 0W40
Probably best available for Euro cars ACEA A3/B3 B4: Castrol Edge 0W30, but on Amazon at $60 for 6qt.
SInce you are under warranty, I would go Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5w40 bcs. of MS-12991. Advance Auto parts has it on constant sale at $33 for 5qt + filter.

There’s only a few 5W40 oils that meet the 12991 spec. RamFan is correct, PP & Valvoline are easiest to find and occasionally have a sale. Try the Motorcraft fluid in your transmission.

I would hold off on the change. I used to do early changes to NO benefit at all to the car or my wallet.
I did a 3500 miles change on my 2019 Jetta 1.4T and THAT was too early. Car has full flo filtration. If you are worried about flotsam in the filter - change JUST the filter. I have never put in a better oil than what came in the sump from the factory - over decades of new cars; I have broken in over 70 NEW cars. Correct Seventy, not seven. If you start to hear rod clatter when the engine is hot regularly, you may wish to change - but I doubt that with a 30 grade lubricant. The Jetta uses a 20 grade with low HTHS.

What does the MANUAL say about the first OC?

Congrats on the "Good" looking Miata. I hope FIAT dialed out some of that silly body roll. This isn't 1949!

Funny I was just looking at a FIAT 124 for sale in NY. Looks good, but suspect at the same time.
I never like to read "just did full service, timing belt, water pump, valve job."
Now it's for sale? Cheap? Id be driving it for another few years after all that $$$.

Means to me that the mechanic found something and said, " dump it fast!"

Use oil with proper ratings and change it when you want. Don't forget the drive line etc .

ArcoGraphite: Thanks for the advice and the pictures. Is that circa 1975? My best friend had one of those in dark blue with that same interior. Yes, they did take out most of the body roll; pretty flat cornering. The reason I was wondering about the early change was that the car had a build date of April, 2018 and had 33 miles when I picked it up. I thought the oil might need changing after having had what I assume were a few short test drives, never getting up to full temp.

Well 33 miles certainly past due.

I think they said 5w40 because the temperature rating for 5w vs 0w oils is not very different on the low end.
It would be a severe cold environment indeed where 5w40 doesn't work but 0w40 does.

Not saying 5w is better than 0w, only that OP has a new vehicle under warranty and FIAT is strict on specs. Mobil 1 0W-40 doesn’t meet the required spec.

Agree on the spec comment; didn’t know how strict they are (It’s my first Fiat), although I’ve never had engine problems under warranty in 50 years of owning cars. Based on prior comments, I would just assume Mobil didn’t see fit to get certified.

To ask about the use of Mobil 1 0W40 as a substitute for the FCA certified stuff, and the board's view on doing an oil change at 1,000 miles after the car having sat for two years. You know, time or mileage?? I thought it was clear; I guess not.
