What's up with FedEx? Last year I had to have a transmission air freighted because FedEx no longer did home deliveries. In the past they delivered an Engine from Japan to my front door. Bass guitar cabinet also. I did see a few FedEx local deliveries but figured they probably had contract obligation with some senders.

My nephew did local deliveries for them for years. He got a CDL for long hauls because he heard that there were big corporate changes in the wind.

I was surprised last week when FedEx delivered a small package to my front door.

UPS won't handle more than 80 lbs. FedEx driver said they do local ones up to 140 lbs now.

FedEx Ground
FedEx Express
FedEx Freight

3 different "companies" per se

FedEx Ground is subbed out. FedEx Express is handled by FedEx themselves because it's guaranteed service.

I assume an engine or transmission would be in a crate or on a pallet which would most likely go by LTL. Might be a long truck or a short truck, but then there will be a pallet jack and a liftgate. And usually because it's residential it costs more.

Not sure I'd want to see the over weight surcharge on a 140lb package ha.

At least that is my understanding of it.

Fed ex delivers here often, including a lot of Walmart shipping orders.

Possibly a different division of Fedex. There are 3 divisions, fed ex ground, fed ex air - like rush stuff, and fed ex freight. Possibly your confusing fed ex freight with fed ex ground or?

I think there is someone here that works for fed ex but I cannot remember who?

The last few times I purchased from Rock Auto, FedEx did not come up as an option. I think it was UPS only. Having said that, UPS has been good on those last few orders.

This might be a Canada-only thing.

This changes here to, depends on the shipment. Some parts warehouses only use one or the other, and some will do both, so it depends on which warehouse you end up with using RA's crazy algorithm.

Now I remember that I read that they began shipping full truck loads only last year.
Which is local, home delivery? Ground, Express, Freight?

Ground and Express will deliver to your house readily.

You will pay surcharges out the wazoo for residential freight because it is being assumed you don't have a forklift in your garage.

Got a 100lb lift table delivered residental recently (soCal) from TX.
Box was beat up and relabeled.

This changes based on what year it is and what rates RA negotiated with UPS, Fedex, USPS, and so on. It can also vary based on commercial address vs residential. Right now, I'm only seeing UPS Ground whether I pick my home or work, though for "air" delivery, it's all Fedex Express.

You are correct. Both Fedex Ground and Fedex Express will deliver up to 150# packages, but I'm sure with "Express" the cost is so prohibitive that it doesn't happen and with Ground, it might be more economical to use Fedex Freight.

Fedex is weird. I've had stuff from Fedex delivered by a Fedex driver in a Fedex van, a Fedex driver in a random white van, and some type of non-uniformed contractor in what looked like his personal car.
