Favorite Travel Discount Sites

I stayed at a Red Roof Inn +
It was the only available hotel in the area. I signed up for a week.

That night it sounded like a bowling alley above me. No idea what was going on.... the whole third floor was loud all night.

The next morning I checked out and didn't complain and just wanted to be gone.

A few days later I got a call from corporate and they inquired why I left....I explained it was noisy all night and I went elsewhere.

They didn't even charge me the night I was there and sent me some coupons for free stay next time..

I booked this place today and by directly pre paying beat Bookings by $120 and then the website gave me a 10% discount code that was a great deal. Right on the water and only 10.6 miles away from where I want to go... thanks all..

Priceline, Costco and AAA are the only ones I have found that offer any significant savings. Always check the price booking direct too. Many times it's the same or cheaper. If its the same you will usually get better treatment if you have any requests on arrival

It's time again as I will be hanging out with Chimmie in Florida over Xmas.... 😁
Not getting any deals booking directly....Trivago seems to be the best deal hotel wise....
Interesting.....

When I travelled, a long, long, long time ago, I'd usually book directly. Occasionally, I'd get a discount through the Illinois Farm Bureau that would work out a bit better, but IIRC, even that was going through the direct site and adding a discount code during checkout.

It looks like the best option is to get quotes for both direct and from the travel sites. A few extra minutes and you can save hundreds.

I'm curious, how will Chimmie behave in Florida?

Will he go full Florida Man or maybe surfer boy?

I hate them all. I've never seen a rate lower than I could get by booking directly.
Like directly to the hotel/motel? I almost always find they have a much lower rate through one of the 3rd party sites. Some of the big chains are careful to atleast match the 3rd party price, so I just book through them, but often the private places have a very high rate on their own website!
I should actually call the hotel one time and see if they would split the difference in price of what they get with the 3rd party cut taken out, but usually I don't stay long enough to worry about $10/night.

You know Chimmie lives in Florida.
He only calls and texts.
I like him because he will sit on the coach and listen to my bullwinkle and smile as he doesn't know any better...
He doesn't badmouth me like the dimwits here. 😆

All I know is that paying additional for the cancellation insurance through Trivago is felony theft. They will make claim payment when you're forced to cancel , impossible, until you threaten legal action and reporting them to your State's attorney generals consumer affairs office.
They are a UK based company with no phone number.
I think for hotels,, booking directly with the property is the way to go.

I will book through booking.com sometimes but at least for hilton, Marriott and IHG it’s often less on there site if your one of their members. They all do member rates now . Marriott will do especially well with “members stay longer” rates for multiple days.

Also booking shows before fees but at least Marriott and I think IHG shows total cost so you have to compare right at the checkout.

I don’t think there is a “always less” answer. You need to check them all.

I usually start at booking. They have the best interface.

Like Bookings, Expedia, Trivago etc.
As someone with seven years of hotel customer service experience and bookings don't do it. Expedia is the worst but they’re all bad. If you have a flight canceled or, itinerary change they will blame the hotel you booked with even though they buy blocks of rooms at a discounted rate and resell them. The hotel, car rental etc doesn't have your money. The Expedia call center people in India were extremely unethical and harassed hotel employees. I wouldn't give them a penny.

After years of using these discount sites I have given up on them. Want a room with a lower floor? A room not facing traffic? You can often write in a note on the booking but You're out of luck. The app double booked you because of an app error and you want one room removed? Nope you have to talk to the hotel direct and they don't care because you used a 3rd party to book the room.
