Favorite Travel Discount Sites

Like directly to the hotel/motel? I almost always find they have a much lower rate through one of the 3rd party sites. Some of the big chains are careful to atleast match the 3rd party price, so I just book through them, but often the private places have a very high rate on their own website!
I should actually call the hotel one time and see if they would split the difference in price of what they get with the 3rd party cut taken out, but usually I don't stay long enough to worry about $10/night.
Sometimes third party websites will be getting close to the booking date with alot of rooms left over to sell. I can remember one night a guest came in and said they paid Expedia $29 for the room. They showed me their phone. Expedia paid us $99 for the night so they lost $79.

Yes, there are no "always" rules. I stayed a long weekend this summer in Raleigh NC area, at a very nice Townlplace Suites on Booking.com for way, way less than Marriott's or any other site. Conversely I went to Orlando three times this summer, stayed in the same Marriott resort - and the Marriott site was by far the cheapest all three times.

Shop around I guess.

I agree - I would never book a discount airline ticket. I can find a different hotel if I must (or sleep in my rental car haha) Vastly different category of problems.

I only do hotels or houses
Never had an issue in many years with those sites... I even asked for certain floors etc and no issues.

I was diamond with Hilton for years. Still wouldn't get prefered floor / view / location.

Prior to GFC you could. Seems like it was all downhill since 2008.

Gave up being loyal to anyone. Mostly go to the same places over and over now anyway so I just have a couple fav's in each city and stay at one.

I'm thinking about flipping the travel site rates...looks lucrative

I ran the rates through a hotel the other day for a 10 day stay
The price was bad, and they said you stay in one room until 12/26 and then go to another- double booked.
Trivago was half the price and no double booking- weird.

I ran into that this summer - there was literally one night that caused the entire problem. If you tried to book across that night your entire rate across the stay got jacked up. I simply avoided that one day and my entire week stay dropped in half.

An app that shows the pricing across an entire calendar can help - like the Marriott App - assuming you have flexibility on exact dates.

Why is the question
Then they tell you it's up to you to tell the front desk.
