Yeah... That post is 5 years old, and the list itself is almost 7!

Mobil 1 0W-40 no longer carries LL01. That is unquestionably the present situation. Whether or not the new formulation will be certified to LL01 or there is a new BMW specification being released remains to be seen.

German Castrol 0W-40 is $21 for 5 quarts. Doesn't get much cheaper than that, and it is a very nice oil. It can't be beat for the price if you need an oil that carries 502/LL01/229.5/A40.

Not to mention it's a list of LL-04 oils, not LL-01.

Which like the Mobil 1 0W-40 FS does not carry actual LL-01 certification.

And, there is no (publicly) available "BMW Approved Oil List". You have to go by what the oil manufacturer states on the container.

Which is of little consequence anyway, published lists (such as the Audi/Volkswagen one) are often outdated the minute they are issued.

True.....apparently meets the spec but is not certified.

I run Liqui-Moly Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 in my 2007 X5 with the 4.8 N62 V8. German oil for a German engine. Nice specs too.

The M54 in my wife's X3 is hard on oil but even so every UOA indicates that any LL-01 oil I've used is good for at least 10K miles. Ditto for the M42 in the Club Sport. The jury is still out on the N55 in the 2er, however.

What makes it hard on oil? I can't say that I've heard that before.

I didn't mean it as a general statement; but in the case of the X3 at 10K miles the TBN is always below 1.0- I change it at 7.5K just to be safe and to stay synced with the service intervals

I see. When I was doing lots of hwy driving in mine, 10K OCI was no problem - TBN was still at 6. Now, when I mainly short trip, that's another story. Now I just change the oil annually, even if that means I only do 3K miles during that time.

If you're sticking to factory recommended OCI (which is about 10K miles, right?), then an LL-04 oil might have a hard time making it this long due to weaker add pack.

According to Amsoil site, they recommend 5W-40 Full SAPS LL-01 oil for that car. Amsoil EFM type. OCI max is 15K miles if it is a turbo.

Hope that helps.
