Is there a big difference between the needle used for a blood test vs a blood donation?

None that my untrained eyes could see or that my arm could feel.

Just don't look at the needle at all.

Try to get a hot chick to do it (the needle that is). You won't want to be a wimp in front of her.

Needles totally don't phase me at all.

It actually bugs some people/nurses that I'm not more bothered about it!

A small 21 gauge needle is usually used for drawing blood. For blood donations they tap you with a much larger 16 to 18 gauge needle.

I'm the SAME way and I HATE it! It started when I was about 18 for some reason. I've fainted while being drawn and in the lobby afterwards. Once I passed out sitting on a stool in a lab class at college digging in my finger with a small needle trying to get blood for a blood type test. Fell right off the stool.

I can cut myself accidentally with a knife or screwdriver while working on something, cut myself on sheet metal under the hood or wherever and bleed, no problem. It's the "medical" aspect that does it to me.

I was at the oral surgeon's office last week getting a consultation to prepare for having my wisdom teeth pulled. Fine. The girl starts going over some of the potential risks including one that had to do with blood. I passed out in the chair and woke up connected to BP monitor and an oxygen tank. Embarrassing and I felt pretty bad the rest of the day.

It's ridiculous because in general I am NOT a squeamish person!

Sorry JHZ, I don't have any advice for you but I'll be watching this thread!

I passed out in the dentists chair while they were hooking me up to put me under to get all 4 wisdom teeth pulled. They revived me to put me under a few minutes later.

Uh, surely you are kidding!?

Are you selling your plasma or are they so desperate for a pint of anything that they would let you donate after having ingested Demerol?

I donate regularly at an apheresis unit of a local university based hospital. Specifically, I donate platelets (it's hopefully what keeps you from bleeding out if you're seriously injured) that are subsequently used for cancer patients.

The screening to be able to donate (blood, red blood cells, platelets) is very intense in that they restrict what medications or over-the-counter meds you can take within the last 48 hours to the past 30 days.

As such, ingesting Demerol or any other pain medication just before you donate will get you sent out the door forthwith.

Even ingesting aspirin or aspirin containing products within 48 hours before donating gets you sent out that same door.

I always have a good meal at least 90 minutes before donating. That is an absolute must. And I never watch them "stick" me and I always ensure they cover the needle with a large gauze pad.

It's also important to drink fluids (juice or lots of water) immediately after you donate, not when you get home. Eating a light snack at the same time also helps, i.e., cookies, crackers, etc.

And thanks for being willing to donate, especially with your experience with blood-letting!
