Why do I need to upload and send my ID?
We require everyone using Facebook to use their authentic name and birthday. This way, you always know who you're connecting with. When we discover accounts that look fake or like they’re using fake information, we ask the owner to verify that they are who they say they are.
In most cases, the easiest way to verify your identity is to follow the on-screen steps to enter your mobile phone number and request a code.
If you can't verify your identity using your mobile number, you'll need to provide a copy of your photo ID. This could be a scanned copy or a close-up photo you've taken. We'll permanently delete this document after we resolve your issue. Review what types of IDs we accept.

So in otherwords, since our ToolMalfunction friend here is likely using a false FB handle (that can be used for spam to other FB members), they are cracking down. I know Ive had multiple friend requests from seemingly false and fake people, so there are questionable handles out there.
FB is a business like any other, and people can choose to or to no use it, and they can verify their members however they want.
I have an FB account, and ignoring the immature eight year-old acting 'has beens' is rather easy. Its also wonderful for sharing stuff with family and friends, with some reasonable intelligence of what should or should not be shown and when.
The questionable nature of GearheadProne is more the issue here.
Facebook's policy is intrusive. I only show my DL to police if I am being detained, etc.
You quote Facebook's policy, but I do not feel that then gives this company the right to personal info. So, in essence, I won't allow Facebook to verify my name. Not that way.
As mentioned, it would be stupid to provide identifiable info like that. And I still feel that license plates only yield identifiable info to police in a patrol car.
You're never being forced by law to use facebook nor is the law forcing you to surrender your data.
So what you are saying is already true, they don't have a right to the data; NOBODY is saying they do. You're volunteering it if you want to use their services.
If you don't want to use their service, so be it, nobody is forcing you to.
Even other services where you maybe believe the requirement is legitimate, those company still doesn't have a right, it's all voluntary.
Like if you need to apply for a loan but you're not very credit-worthy. The Financing company also doesn't have a "right" to your data, nobody is forcing you to provide it. But you also don't have a "right" to a loan. If you want that loan and service they are providing, you got to fulfill the requirements they are asking for.
IF you look you look young and attempt to buy some beer, they will ask to see your ID. They don't have a "right" to your driver's license, you can refuse to show them. But they can refuse to sell you the beer.
I think you might get madder at the new practice at some sites that require you to register and create an account with an email before you can see what they are selling. There's
a potential submarket here for the tin-foil hat folks where you could make a website that just gathers and shows that info to people who just want to see the results, but don't want to create an account first, and somehow make some money on the referrals.
