guys, e-mails from customer service are fine, but my manual says 929 spec...I've also seen correspondence that says, "no,only use oil meeting 929", so which one to believe?...I hope 946 spec does supercede 929, but for MY comfort it has to be 929. Is there some info I've missed that claims the castrol edge oil is a potential problem?...from what I've seen, does well in the wrx, the beemers, corvettes...people seem to like it...haven't seen any negatives....

Here's the thing:

Companies won't go out and certify their oil for an obsolete spec, which is why Mobil 1 lists its 5w30 as being certified for WSS-M2C946-A, whilst recommended for WSS-M2C929-A.

This is the same reason the SAME lubricant is Dexos approved but "recommended" for the older GM spec's like 4718M and 6094M.

If Ford has obsoleted the spec, I imagine they may not even offer certification for it anymore.

This seems completely plausable, why then would Ford state in their 2011 manual to use 929 spec oil, when it was already replaced by the 946? could have been an oversight? but for MY piece of mind, I'm looking for 929 spec oil...in the literature, on the bottle....and I've chosen the Castrol, UOA to follow.

Thats the exact question I asked ford.

Because they were in the phasing out stage from SM to SN specs, it takes time for oil companies to get and be approved for the new specs. Have fun trying to find that spec in a year when 929 will be off of almost all oils being replaced by 946. Do you think ford would put out a new 5w-30 oil with the 946 spec that would void warranty or be worse quailty than 929??? come on man! By that logic you've already voided your warranty with the dealer changes of 946 Motorcraft

I didn't say 946 was worse than 929...it makes sense that 946 should replace 929, just going by the manual-again that states 929 is required, if it happens that the 929 spec is "phased out", I'll simply improvise, adapt, and overcome, to 946 or whatever its replacement is, but I'm sure by this time there will be much more documentation stating that this is indeed the case! I'm not allegiant to one brand of oil, or another, just simply trying to decide what I think is the best 929....I use Mobil 1 in my sons car, and Pennzoil Platinum in my wifes car, with no complaints with any of those brands. I'm on a fact finding mission, not a search and destroy mission.

If 929 is what you want, then I have in my hot little hand a qt. of M1 5-30 SN and is recommended for Ford 929.

I like Mobil 1, always have, and currently use it,but what it says is (because I currently have one in my hand) "Mobil 1 5w-30 is recommended by ExxonMobil for use in applications requiring Ford wss-m2c929-a" not the same as the paragraph that proceeds, that states "Mobil 1 5w-30 meets or exceeds the requirements of: Ford wss-m2c946-a".

Am I missing something? Looks like M1 5-30 is good to go in your Truck.

Could be, if you subscribe to the fact that 946 supercedes 929, I personally need more documentation that makes it perfectly clear...my bottle of Castrol edge with titanium states "exceeds the world's toughest industry standards: wss m2c946-a, wss m2c929-a, gm6094m performance, etc. This holds more weight than just claiming BP recommends this oil for any certain spec.

Use an oil that meets the Ford spec that you're comfortable with, once you're 100% certain the 946 spec is GTG use it. I'm certain the 946 will be fine, but you're the owner of the vehicle and the person who has to live with your decision. BTW there's nothing wrong with that.

Amsoil XLF 5-30XL list both the 946 and 929 specs. You can't be wrong with this oil and it is API certified as well as i no this is an issue with your truck being under warranty.

XLF is "recommended for" both those Ford spec's. It is certified for neither. It is an excellent lubricant, but this steps even further away from what the OP wants, which is an oil that is CERTIFIED for the 929 spec.
