Russia is flying "training missions" with these BEEEEEEEEAAAASTS along the Alaska coast as well: the TU-160 Blackjack

Elmendorf AFB, Alaska now has the 2nd squandron of F-22s. Pretty crazy stuff!

Russia has a serious fuel shortage for these things. I saw a special that went into the training of airforce pilots and they get like 15-20 hours in the sky a year. They didn't even have enough money to fix their simulator!

As someone else said, pure saber rattling.

That is not an F-15. That American aircraft in that photograph is an F4 Phantom.

The OP is not referring to the photos with the F4s.

Wasn't the TU-160 just the Soviet answer to the B1? (Like the TU-144 was the Soviet answer to the Concorde.)

The 160 is considerably larger and faster

Indeed; the very first Blackjack models were basically a B-1 knockoff - the latest model is the heaviest, fastest bomber ever made. Like Aldaris indicated, from a pure aviation performance perspective (ie.; not counting radar and actual combat capability), the Blackjack is like the 1,000 hp dodge ram cummins truck of the aviation world. Pure performance. 14,000 ft/min climb rate; 1,300 mph top speed (compared to about 850 for the B-1)

It's got BALLS

Its performance is very similar to the B-1a, which was much faster than the redesigned B-1b.

does the bear serve the same low level high-speed mission that the B-1b does?

I don't believe it will do 1300mph on the deck. The B-1B is optimized for speed at low altitude, whereas the B-1A had variable vanes at the inlets to optimize for whatever altitude. (This was as much a money saving measure as anything). The B-1B is fast on the deck. Not many planes will catch her at low level. I'm not sure how the Blackjack does with the same mission profile. I'm sure it is formidable, though. Its biggest problem would be the F-22. It can go fast for long distances, too. It sets a new standard in this area for a fighter.

Their newer Sukhoi fughters are quite handy as well.
PS I posted the old pix with the Phantoms to show how long these games have been going on.

Mark:

There's another telling detail in the photos you posted: those aren't bomb dropping versions of the Bear -- they're snooping versions. Note the radomes. The Bears were used for many missions beyond bombing; spying and over-the-horizon targeting being two big ones. It's been a long time since I had to know the versions in detail, so I'm not sure exactly which these are, but it's a safe bet that they were up to something besides carrying bombs.
