Just wanted to start adding my 2 cents in since I have been a long time lurker and observer of the site. I have read a lot of posts and negative comments about Fram and the OCOD. I have only used OEM filters and Frams in all my vehicles and I will proudly admit that Fram has NEVER failed or caused any sort of weird noises at startup.

I have moved all of my vehicles over to Fram Ultra and have been very pleased and impressed with its performance. Absolutely no startup rattle or other issues that other members have discussed with other types of filters.

I have found the perfect combo of using Pennzoil Ultra and the Fram Ultra on my car and my wife's suv. Just my 2 cents...

The fram ulra is the best and only fram filter worth using. While it is ~$9, it has a stout construction and synthetic wire backed media. Its a good filter.

I use Armor All Ultra Shine Wash and Wax, Kelly Ultra GT tires, Michelin Stealth Ultra Hybrid Wiper Blades, Pentius Ultraflow Air Filters, Fram Ultra Oil Filters, but only Pennzoil Platinum.

Fram knows how to build a good filter, but it has NEVER been the OCOD. To bad they charge 9 bucks for a filter about as good as a Pure One at half the price.

Although it can be said that there is nothing wrong with the cheaper Fram filters, it can also be said that there is nothing right about them either. You can get a better filter for the same price as an Orange Fram. Purolator Classic is one.

I saw those ultra's at Canadian tire the other day. Quite impressive to say the least but in Canada they cost over 15 bucks each. So sure they are a great filter but does an engine need a filter constructed like that?
I've used the ocod and never had an issue that I'm aware of but now that I'm a bitoger I aim for at least a tough guard,or wix.

Unfortunately you can't discuss an Ultra on this forum without it denegrating into an OCOD bash session. In fact you can't even talk about Fram air filters without the OCOD being mentioned. Ridiculous.

OP you've got a fine filter, with features and performance that rivals or beats many comparable filters that cost several dollars more.

The comparision to a PureOne is silly, the only similarities are that they are oil filters with excellent efficiency ratings. The type of construction, media, capacity and intended length of use are all vastly different (and the Ultra is an upgrade in all of those categories). The Ultra is best compared to a Bosch D+ or the new Puro synthetic filter (both of which cost more by the way).

+1 ... my feelings too. The Ultra is the only FRAM oil filter I'd use.

The Ultra actually beats the new Purolator synthetic on paper in the efficiency rating and OCI department.

Ultra: 99% @ 20 microns, 15K OCI

PL: 99% @ 25 microns, 10K OCI

There is nothing wrong with an orange can provided you use it what it is intended for.
I have a Mobil 1 filter on my car right now, but in feb or march when I change out my oil again, I'll probably slap an orange can on again because I'll be back to using conventional oil, rather than the synthetic I'm using now.

The new Purolator syn filter media is 2x ply + screen. Same as the Xtended guard. The Fram Ultra is an upgrade to the Xtended guard, has new media with a thicker 1X ply with a screen. Having used both the XG and Ultra, there is a visible difference in the "looks" of the oil throughout the OCI.

One note: Be careful installing the Ultra. The sure grip, sturdy can and some oil on the gasket had me putting them on too tight, swearing getting them off.

Going to try the Purolator syn filter next, see how it compares to the Ultra using my unscientific eyeball looks blotter test. Haven't seen them yet, not sure how much they cost.

Take a black Sharpie pen and put a mark on the can so you can see when 2/3 turn is achieved once the base gasket makes contact with the engine.
