My experience:
I have been using Amsoil SSO 0w30 since November 2008, corresponding to 58K mi on the OD (today at 84K). I used the EaO filter and SSO. In spring 2009 (+8K mi roughly) I changed to M1 5w30 and Fleetguard LF3554. I was not happy with the additional startup noise, slight loss of smoothness, and slight loss of plain old peppiness, but was very pleased with the improved oil pressure on startup and generally less fluctuation in oil pressure (I attribute this to the filter). Also the 3800 was weeping more M1 past the valve stem seals even though the M1 was 5W(as opposed to 0W). So, at 74K mi (early last fall) I changed again, back to Amsoil SSO, but using the Fleetguard filter. I am very, very happy with the quick starts, the smoothness, the good (visual) condition of the oil at 10K (now), and the reasonable cold weather MPG and driveability benefits (of course starting is a cinch, even below 0F).
My COMMENTS & OPINIONS:
The SSO is very pricey, but is a humdinger of an oil. I don't know how to do any better in my application, other than some minor tweaks I mention below. For me, I paid for the PC trial (6 mo.), and bought 8 gallons of SSO. I feel I got good value.
I have used the Amsoil P.I. with results that are consistent with advertised performance, though I lean toward Techron to maintain the results. I will point out that while the P.I. got performance results, 4oz of MMO per 10 gal. fuel has made the engine smoother running without compromising the P.I. results.
IMO the EaO filters are not the value that the oils are. The Fleetguards available on Ryder.com are a way better value, and a better filter IMO. I have found the LF3554 and SSO to be a GREAT combo for me.
FUTURE PLANS & TWEAKS to my method:
IN the future I plan to add some AMS XL (?) 10w30 for summer as makeup oil to cut startup clatter in warm weather. The SSO gives some startup clatter in warm weather (60F up).
I may also add super fine grade MoS2 (powder) to make life easier on the compression rings and make up for the rinsing from reformulated gas.
I will try some MMO or ARX in the oil (probably MMO) with 2-3K left on my OCI to see if anything improves.
Hope this helps!
