Hi guys- I have a 1997 Grand Prix with the supercharged engine. I was under the car over the weekend to remove a leaky and damaged resonator. The exhaust is otherwise from the factory (and surprisingly in decent shape- they must have used good steel!).

I noticed that after the main run of piping toward the back of the car, it splits into two for the dual exhaust. The main piping is 2.25, and it looks like it splits into maybe two 1.75 pipes going toward the muffler. From a volume/velocity standpoint, I'm sure that's fine. But I started wondering whether the actual transition point might be a little restrictive.

I figure that at that point, no matter what, the scavenging effects are pretty much gone because of all the bends to get to the mufflers.

What would happen if that cross pipe were changed to a larger pipe? Either continuing with the 2.25, or even bigger?

What I predict/imagine is that the current setup is causing a bit of a restriction, as the exhaust has to change directions very quickly. It maybe even sets up some weird reflection problems. By increasing the diameter of the pipe, I expect that the direction change becomes less severe, and that the exhaust pulses would be dampened- from a stream of fast pulses to a stream of slower, lower pressure and less dynamic gasses. The result being that the scavenging from the mail line continues as is, or even works better, as the stream has less restrictions to "push against"...

Might change the sound too- I can see where something like that might turn into an echo chamber and make it sound awful, but it could also improve the sound. That would probably be an effect of the resonance of the pipe size, length and material I would use.

I made a basic diagram of what I'm talking about. Top is current, lower is proposed. (The actual system has a lot more bends from the main line to the mufflers, I didn't show them for simplicity.)

The two 1.75" pipes combined are already a greater volume over a fixed length compared to the 2.25" pipe over that same length.

Those two 1.75" diameter pipes are about 21% larger than the 2.25" pipe that feeds them.

So I don't see much gain or much restriction in that cross pipe.

A very simple analysis indicates it's the single 2.25" pipe that is the restriction in this system, not considering any non-mandrel bends.
 
I don't think you are going to see any performance game. Being a supercharged engine, it would benefit much more from removing the cat(s) or some tube headers. Some of the OEM manifolds are extremely restrictive.
 
To be clear, I was speaking about what was presented, Jdblya is probably right. There are even more restrictive things upstream of what you've presented here.
 
I owned this very car once upon a time and did exactly what you are thinking. Had a much cleaner split done, then went 2 1/4 all the way back. Used Magnaflow mufflers. Didn't do a thing for performance but sounded as good as you were going to get a six banger to sound.
 
Actually the thing I did that had the most effect on the exhaust (and performance) was a high flow cat.

I guess I should clarify- I'm not looking to get more horsepower. If that were a result, great. I was more thinking of efficiency and sound. (And just something to do or at least think about.)

My thought is that at cruise or part throttle, the super charger is closed off and the engine acts like a normal one and would be able to take advantage of any scavenging improvements. And since the scavenging basically stops at that point anyway, it made sense to me that opening it up would do... something.

Does anyone know what the fluid dynamics consequences of increasing the volume of that area would be?
 
I think that by enlarging the cross over that you may set up chamber resonances. In that instance the laminar exhaust flow would become turbulent or worse at some RPMs and you would lose power. Just too many variables to calculate the exact effect.

Did you delete the silly W-body U-bend yet? That will have more impact on performance than making the crossover larger.
 
Forogt about that one sciphi, it's been a while since I owned the car. Did the u bend delete and got rid of the resonator too. Again, no performance gains that you could feel, but I felt better!
 
The U-Bend is on its way out. Didn't have the pieces to make it work at the time.

I'll bet the U-Bend helps keep the cat "lit" on low-load situations, besides being a protector for the O2 sensor. Just a little restriction to keep the cat warm.

I took out the resonator over the weekend. Don't think I noticed anything by feel, the sound is a little throatier I'd guess.

I looked down the tube before I threw it out. It seems like it was a pretty good piece- no rust or anything on the inside, and the perforations on the inside didn't poke into the airflow path.
 
Maybe. Although H-bodies don't have that bend, but they do have 2.25" single piping all the way back.

Whatever, it's all good.
