Exhaust manifold gaskets

I didnt deal with them. My dad took them and had them machined. Was $70 by the way. Still not leaking.

Well, I hate to dig up an old thread, but the leak is back with a vengeance. Im going to try tighting them first before anything drastic. But Im not too sure, it sounds pretty bad. Very random too. It hasnt been stressed lately, just DD duties.

Did you use gaskets, or did you simply bolt manifolds directly to the heads with a bit of RTV as suggested earlier?

I've worked on diesel engines for 12 years, and I've never seen anybody use the aforementioned no-gasket method. Not saying neccesarily that it wouldn't work (as I know there are automotive applications out there that don't use exhaust manifold gaskets), but I'd be a bit leery of it... especially in your case where the exhaust gasket surfaces on the head were not freshly machined.

If you DID use gaskets, and they've failed again, then I suppose you have no choice but to take it back apart. Re-check the flatness of the manifolds, and also check the flatness and surface condition of the exhaust gasket surfaces on the heads.

I had that happen once with a combine. Started it up and it sounded kinda funny- bucked and sputtered, but smoothed out once I revved it up a bit.

I did finally get to checking them out when it was cold and the front two bolts on both sides were way loose. I tightened them up and no more leak. I find it odd the other bolts were still tight when the fronts had worked their way out. Oh well.
