I've been battling with strange noises under the hood of my car for the past 6 months or so. I've taken it to Acura a number of times and they keep saying they can't hear what I hear, but it's clearly there. When I start the car cold, it sounds almost like a diesel engine, but only when I put it into reverse/drive and the RPM's drop down to 1,000 rpm. Then when I accelerate, I hear a brushing/ticking noise. At first I thought it might be my Alternator's bearings but it turned out that my Alternator is fine. When the car warms up, most of the noise goes away, except the brushing noise. I noticed that on the bottom of my hood right above the header, there's a fine film of black soot. Which leads me to believe that I might have an exhaust leak coming from the header/exhaust manifold area. I started thinking that it probably needs a new exhaust manifold gasket. Is there any way I can confirm a leak? And how difficult it might be to do this myself? Thanks a lot
