some "men" wont change their own oil, but "by GOD" their a sm engine genius! i see it daily on here...........

I spent 23 years working on forklifts, cars, trucks, some tractors and a little construction thingies and I have never really worked on a small engine other than replacing an ignition coil on a chainsaw and 2 pull starter thingies on my p.o.s. Caftsman lawn mower that I bought from a neighbor that was like new and real cheap It has a Techemse motor that has its oil changed once a year with whatever is left over from what ever is around. It has had syn oils car oils, 2 seasons of 5w-20 Motorcraft oil and some HDEO oil the motor is the best part of the lawn mower 12 years oil and everything is bad except the motor. I can't wait till the motor dies so I can get another mower" no Idea on what to get though it takes 30 minutes to cut the lawn 10 months a year " that doesn't have to be pulled to chop up all the mulched grass clippings. I decided to quit changing the oil last fall.

techumse is dead, Briggs had a good engine (vanguard), honda is good (epa problems) Kohler should stick to toilets, Kawasaki is GREAT!! so wheres the "chondas"? theyre coming and sneaky and good!!

You posted this in another thread which I did not reply to, so I guess the same could be turned back around on you in some sort of fashion... I guess people have many reasons for not changing their oil if that's the when compared to working on a small engine.... a couple come to mind are warranty scare, bang for buck ($20 is cheap for all you need oil change) or in general just don't care for the mess. I wouldn't judge anyone on their oil changing desire to their knowledge of small engine...

By the way I have yet to meet a small engine master mechanic that knows everything.. They have either learned one engine, or do like the rest of us trouble shoot going by the easiest/most likely to the hardest/less likely then you have to always throw in the cost..

Anyone claiming to know everything has a weakness.

"daily on here" That's a mouthful right there. Got an example or three? Seeing all your "sm" posts, didn't know if you were referring to API SM or gettin' all kinky on us. Is typing out small, kind of a hassle?

I've worked on a few engines, and haven't worked on many more. Right now, I prefer the engines I haven't worked on - and that has nothing to do with my mechanical prowess.

AMEN

When it comes to OPE, most of my motorcycles and ATVs, NOTHING is taken to dealers for repairs. I won't give a dealership a dime if it can be avoided. And now with HST (13% Harmonized Sales Tax) I make every effort to avoid as many retail purchases as I can. I buy used equipment in good shape and fix/refurbish it.

I enjoy working on small machines. I get particular satisfaction if I can make repairs with whatever I have readily available.

If I'm rebuilding an engine, I'll order all of my parts from U.S. sources, have them shipped to the border, clear customs myself and save loads of money. Just about every conceivable piece from bearings to connecting rods, pistons, carb parts and seals etc. are usually much less than half the price Canadian dealers charge. Combine those savings with the $80.00/hr labour charge plus shop expenses I don't pay and I save a great deal of money and have a good time doing it.

Life's good when you can do your own work.

It's called "harmonized" because they combined the provincial sales tax of 8% and federal tax of 5%. That in itself is not the issue. What the dirty bustards did was add the 8% pst to many previously exempt items. Not frivolous stuff either.

They added 8% to almost everything imaginable including essentials such as home heating fuel, electricity bills, gasoline, water, all services etc. It is a travesty. Every citizen in the province will feel the pain but the people who will be hurt the worst are the old on fixed income, the under-privileged and the poor.

I'm still incensed by the Liberal government enacting such a greedy tax grab on items of such importance.

I've made it a personal vendetta to avoid buying retail in the province of Ontario. I buy out of province and pay for shipping or buy under the table and used goods. It still usually works out to be quite a bit less than buying it locally.

borat, I feel for you Bro, but I still think it's better to be a Canadian!

No problem being a Canadian. Not so proud of being an Ontarian.

Have to admit however that Ontario isn't the only province to get in on the HST gouge. Provinces with a Liberal government in power over the past few years have done the same thing. HST provinces so far are: Nova Scotia 15%, New Brunswick 13%, Newfoundland/Labrador 13%, Ontario 13% and British Columbia 12%.

Quebec and the other western provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the territories of North West Territory, Nunavut and Yukon don't have it.

I have no problem with the idea of HST. I do have a problem with adding 8% tax to items that are essential for survival.

Joel, its not that im so smart, im just smart enough to read a manual, all my "vast" knowledge is in there, stick to the facts jack! lol

You could say everyone thinks they are an auto mechanic. Compared to working on modern cars working on power equipment, motor cycles etc is usually a cake walk in my experience. That's not to take anything away from really good small engine and power equipment mechanics.
