I found some older posts about HPL small engine oil, and now I’m interested. It seems as though @SubieRubyRoo is the most well-versed on this topic and has used it. I’m interested in the 5w40 version and was curious if there are any specs on this oil floating around? I didn’t want to bother HPL and figured I’d float this question here first.

send them an email! they are very quick at responses and happy to help. i will be ordering another drum of HPL this morning.

I’ve emailed with Dave H. in the past but don’t like to be a pain about something so minor. I’m sure he answers enough frivolous emails on the daily; that’s why I asked here first. If I don’t get any info, then I’ll send an email.

I have a VOA here from the HDEO CC 5w-40. I'm using it in my 18kW generator, Bronco & will be changing to it when the factory fill on my new lawn mower is ready. Not exactly what you're asking for as it's the PAO/Ester version instead of the G3/Ester but add pack should be similar.

Thanks, I am aware of how to find a majority of the other oil specs. I prob spend too much time on that site. That oil may be similar, but is not the small engine specs from what I gather.
What I sent you is the Link for the Small Engine Oil, meaning the HDEO oil from HPL, now the only other oil from HPL would be there CK-4 Specked Oil. You have a choice, the difference between HPL's HDEO and there CK-4 Oil is minimal. JMO

It is very similar to their CK-4 HDEO, but has a different antioxidant additive approach since small engines are usually run infrequently with long periods of storage, and when run they are used at maximum power the entire time.

Just call Mary Jane @ (815) 932-3288 and mention BITOG15 for 15% off! If you call in you can also order smaller quantities in case you need to mix and match.

Any idea if this is similar to the cold climate hdeo? Or is it more in line with a typical 5w40 hdeo? If it’s similar to a standard hdeo, I’d rather just use the cc hdeo 5w40. I do like the aspects you noted regarding additives geared toward storage and continuous heavy loads. Only reason I ask is bc I see temps around -10f at times and this will be an all season oil. My last run was with HPL 5w30 no vII and it currently has 5w30 pcmo. I want to bump to a 40 weight but also want some decent cold weather performance from it.

When you look at HPL's Website, they do not have a Synthetic Small Engine Oil listed, it is either there HDEO or CK-4 Oil. I am willing to bet that the price of the Synthetic Small Engine Formula oil is the same price as the HDEO oil.
That’s correct. That’s why I tagged subierubyroo in the first post because he mentioned that you had to call to order it. Not all of their products are available online (this I knew). As for the price of the small engine-branded oil, I’m not sure. I’m also not concerned about the price (in a non-arrogant, non-independently wealthy way).

I have the small engine 5w40 cold climate in my generator and my mom’s push mower and Troybilt snowblower. It’s a universal oil that will work in just about anything, year-round, regardless of application or climate.

Luckily, I saved an invoice from Mary Jane for 2 quarts of the 10W-40 Small Engine Formula with the BITOG Discount. The invoice was from December 24, 2024. The price was $20.61

The HPL CK-4 10W-40 would be $20.54 for 2 Quarts
The HPL HDEO 10W-40 would be $18.96 for 2 Quarts
