Ever wondered how long OLM's have been around?

Check out the is 1987 PS article on GM's system:

http://books.google.com/books?id=oAAAAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA132&dq=%22oil+change+intervals%22&lr=&as_pt=MAGAZINES#v=onepage&q=%22oil%20change%20intervals%22&f=false

What a pathetic article. It provides some interesting facts but this quote "Researchers discovered that most motorists were ignoring the oil-change intervals listed in the owner's manual - no suprise considering the complexity of the instructions..." really bugs me. Complexity? Only if you can't read!

Anyway, continue on.

I have a 1987 BMW e30. It's "Service Interval" system in the instrument cluster takes coolant temperature, RPM (tach pulses) and speed (speedometer pulses) as inputs. We can't know if it actually uses that information, but the signals are wired to the microcontroller.

BMW used that system from at least 1983, and perhaps prior.

I'd heard that BMW's system just used gallons of fuel consumed (which makes sense when you think about it). Is that not the case, or is it a newer thing?

I think the "original" OLM was the sticker the oil change places put on people's windshield telling them when their next change was due

True! Or even further back, prior to the plastic w/s stickers it was the paper door-jamb OCI stickers.

Joel

...or even further back, it was "Gee, I haven't seen Joe down at the garage in a while....think I'll stop by and see him...."

:D

Hey, I still do that!

The 1st. generation SI system(introduced in the the E28 5 Series) did utilize multiple factors to calculate service intervals. However, Munich's engineers discovered that basing maintenance intervals on liters of fuel consumed was just as accurate and thus switched to the simpler method.

But in the latest models they went back to the more intricate OLM design again - now oil life is determined based on readings from a dielectric sensor.

Yes,the CBS system is a much more comprehensive and complex implementation. I was only referring to the SI system.
