D1g3 oils have no minimum hths for 20 and 30 grade. I suppose the thinnest euro rated 20 which has a minimum viscosity of at >2.6 hths may protect slightly less than a thick d1 g3 5w30 with 3.1-2 hths but that wouldn't be a realistic expectation one could have.

Additionally, if comparing xW-20, LSAC/API/dexos oils to Euro approved (VW508.00 etc.) oils, you'll find both have very similar HTHS. Unlike comparing 5W30 where the HTHS of the Euro is significantly more than that of the ILSAC. However, even in the Euro approved xW20, the chemistry may be more robust.
Great question. Being that the euro TGDI engines tested are different and the testing protocols are probably different I don't know if we can draw any parallels between them. Thankfully almost all euro oils sold today meet the "performance requirements" of SP so the point is rather moot.
A thicker oil may be better for timing chain wear in general (or it may not, haven't seen any evidence of this). The test in API SP is specific to problems with chains in GDI engines caused by soot. Viscosity isn't relevant to this type of wear. It's all about the additive package.

1) Amsoil
2) Mobil 1
3) Redline
4) Valvoline
5) HPL
6) Shell/Pennzoil
Look at all the Data you can gather and then make your Decision.
