I once read the interstate system and urban highways were initially designed for the trucking industry. The thought was that putting trucks on urban highways would free surface streets for automotive traffic.

What a joke. Semis clog ALL roads, not just highways...

That depends on the size of the city centre.
We're not talking about downtown Hooterville here.

Personal opinion.
Its not fun to need two Sherpa guides,a camping stove and stools to go to your favourite store.

Boulder and Denver have city centers like that.
I stay away from them, as the hippies and yuppies who regular those places typically either physically stink, or their personalities stink.

Luckily, there are plenty of places in other locations around here that have the identical food for typically less money.

BC.

More rail, please. Subsidize it, if needs be.

If rail was cheaper, then they would be used more often. Trucks are used because they deliver a MUCH faster delivery time, and time is money in business.

With trains, you have to ship your product to just a few hubs and distribute from there. With trucks, you can put it on a truck and ship directly to your customer. This INCREASES efficiency.

"Prove it Tempest!"
The fact that it is happening is proof enough.

Big, heavy, long haul items that don't have to get to places far from train hubs in a hurry ARE being moved by train. Coal is a prime example.

If you look real close at the first cartoon there's a shell station with gas $1.01 gal. That sounds like utopia to me lol. I can't say walking on foot in a city center among the unwashed masses and the hipster yuppies a like is all that pleasant. And the higher prices and rent are hign enough to finance a Cadillac lol.

If something is more efficcient AND it creates jobs (OTR trucking), that sounds like a win-win to me. The last thing we need is to eliminate more jobs. I do have to say these trucks complete destroy city roads they travel on especially near stop ligts but on the way down the strip where trucks are veavily traveled.

It's Europe, not the US. They have have a different concept of urban living than what we have in the US (except for a handful of cities).

That was my point America and its populace is not the same as Europe. The first cartoon is depicting the USA.

That news story was short on details and all it mentioned was automobiles. What about motorized scooters I've always heard about in parts of Europe? They use less gas but tend to pollute more and noisy and annoying. Even bicycles can be annoying to pedestrians.

At some point shipping time will become less of a priority than the amount of fuel needed to ship goods. That's where trains are far more economical. It also wouldn't cut jobs by doing away with the OTR truckers. They could all go work for the railroads...

But fuel prices aren't there yet. How could the railroads possible provide as many jobs as OTR trucking? I don't know much about trains but I think it can replace 200-500 trucks. That is a lot of jobs that I don't see the train transport replacing.

Try the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and DEFENSE Highways...

For the DEFENSE of the United States of America, for the citizens (not "residents", nor "visitors" nor "denizens") of the United States of America.

There are urban transportation means other than cars. Many cities have good mass transit systems. Of course it's slightly less convenient and maybe a nuisance at first but in large part due to the traffic jams cars create.

I lived in some major cities both in Europe and in the US, currently out in the country.....

There are both US and European cities where you simply dont need a car to get where you want.

If you lived long enough in one of them you might possibly get it. It really isnt that hard to get about without a car in just about any major metropolis.

That of course has nothing to do with the fact that I love owning cars and will always do. To the point that even when I didnt need one I always had one, Sometimes the expense was not worth it but I still did.

Im not afraid of walking a few blocks from a subway or a bus or a tram stop, No matter the weather. Sweet as I am I'm still not made of sugar so I wont melt....

And that of course is just 1 or 2 or 3 Cents, Euros, Pounds, Yen, Drakma's whatever....of my opinion.....
