Actually, this is why companies like Exxon are not that hesitant to sequester CO2 in underground formations. CO2 can be liquified and pumped down disposal wells and long as there is a reward for that. The fairly new Sturgeon refinery near Edmonton, Alberta has bitumen coming in from Fort Mac where it is converted to diesel fuel and the resulting CO2 from the process is sent by pipeline for underground disposal in a liquid form. They compress the CO2 gas to 2500 psi, then cool it down until it liquifies. This requires a 4800 HP six stage centrifugal compressor and then a 1740 HP refrigeration compressor package and then a 350 HP liquid CO2 pump. Some of the CO2 is pumped into aging oilfillds where it’s miscible with the existing oil still in place for enhanced recovery.

They have been trying to get a pipeline in the Midwest that terminates in Illinois to dump the CO2 from all the ethanol plants in the area and west. not having much luck.

The adjustment of target is great. The aggressive first pass was good to motivate industry to start researching/devloping/producing an alternative of inevitable.

You set goals , work on them and adjust as needed. Innovation happens that way.

You might get rid of ICE power in a 100 years. And then only when cheaper energy replaces it. Inevitable, hardly.....

We have a big rights-freedom-legal problem in Europe, elites behind are trying to attack our rule of law, non-retroactivity laws, constitutional rights and private property (vehicles, free movement, laboral rights, economic activity etc) and legal UE vehicle homologation to drive in public roads using ZBE thing (similar to UK ULEZ) in cities without real pollution, even without pullution registers! It's a big joke and aggression to public and private rights, it's a big ilegal private vehicle expropiation. Actually in Spain and others countries we are doing court procedures against this false ecologism impositions because no real pollution reasons even from official data, private property expropiation and violation of our legal vehicle homologations until today.

Can confirm!

Our Government here in Wales openly say they are making decisions to cut the use of cars for private journeys. An example was the blanket change of all 30mph zones (which have been 30mph since the 60's) to 20mph. One of their reasons for the change was specifically to encourage the use of other transport methods. They're also funnelling huge sums of money into charities who support 'active travel' who are then being allowed to remove roads or reduce the size of them to install seldom-used bike lanes. Now, I'm not sure how many of you people have been to Wales, but it's very hilly and very Wet. Not the sort of place you'd want to use a bike on a regular basis!

US has it's own issues, but I've been very tempted to leave the UK for the US for quite some time and those feelings are only getting stronger.

There are other contributors to modifying the "ICE ban". The great Volkswagon company is not achieving its goals to move the company towards hybrid and EV vehicles, and profitability overall.

Oliver Blume, CEO of Volkswagen Group, recently said that the current situation at the company “affects us all emotionally, including me personally.”
Blume said the automotive industry had “changed massively” in recent years.
“Together, we will implement appropriate measures to become more profitable. We are leading VW back to where the brand belongs — that is the responsibility of all of us,” he added.

I have high confidence in CEO Blume; he is showing courage and leadership by speaking reality unlike certain other CEOs who gaslight their business conditions.

Goes for most automakers in the E/U as the onslaught of less expensive cars made in China creates ripples across Europe. Lawmakers in Europe acknowledge this problem. It's not only VW a quick search shows Tesla Europe sales down 16% in July Howver to my surprise BMW has taken the lead how short lived it maybe.

In the interest of accuracy =
VW USA reported in a 9.3% increase in sales for 2023

I see a lot of their SUVs. I can’t remember the last time I saw a new base trim Jetta. I’ve seen a few of the GLIs. It seems the enthusiasts are keeping the car lines alive. What’s surprising here is the Golf R. They’ve always sold quick off the lot. I wonder if they’ve massively increased production for the US since last year? That’s the only way I could see them more than doubling sales.

Especially when those formations are depleted oil wells.

I had to go into a local mid sized city yesterday and over the radio came that they want to drop the speed limit city wide to 25/20 mph of course in the interest of public safety and it looks like a done deal. There will be strict enforcement for this money sucking scheme, so much for fast vehicles. LOL Coming to a town near you!

Yup - just opened up miles of smooth/wide freeway and one of the counties suddenly drops from 75mph to 65mph whilst you look around wondering why. Then you start seeing the discreet paint jobs and hidden lights on patrol units …

Semi caffeinated ramblings:

No one knows what the future holds but it always struck me as arrogant or detached from reality to think we would have no ICE cars sold 10’years from now.

Second, the mania around climate change, if not brought back to rationality about the relative and real risk it poses, threatens great harm to the working classes in the developed world (see eg VW this week) and the developing world generally. In the developing world, many more are killed by hunger and pestilence than the environment heating up or storms, to take a common and misused example. Development requires energy, development yields wealth, and wealth reduces death from hunger and disease because you need wealth and development to have the appropriate minimum degree of healthcare and a stable food supply.

Finally, any time I meet someone who mentions climate change and seems very concerned about it (admittedly I am not one of those people), I ask them if they favor nuclear power. If they say they don’t like nuclear and go off on it, then in my mind I kind of write them off as uneducable and politely move on. Without nuclear or cleaner fossil fuels to back up the grid, western cities will have Baghdad like electrical reliability. So if folks want to beat the climate change drum, then embrace nuclear. No real alternative.

On a lighter note, enviro mania cannot and should not be allowed to destroy the availability of good amateur track cars like the Miata. The hybrid “sports cars” and “sports sedans” weigh as much as family trucksters and are similarly enjoyable to drive on a race track - which is to say not enjoyable. A second lighter note is that the need to clean up ICE has brought us to a point where the ICE has almost been perfected - look at motors like the BMW b58 and the new Stellantis hurricane - the standard output version has 400 plus hp and a torque curve as flat as Nebraska and the HO version has 500hp! This part of the green movement I can fully support!

Have a good weekend folks.
