orwellian sheep land?
Just changed out the [whatever was in there before] MTL with some XD-3. The transmission is in it's second car, gets powershifted regularly and has covered over 320K KM's. The synchros have seen better days, but surprisingly this XD-3 really smoothed the shifts and quietened the gear whine! I'm very impressed so far... anyone else try this befor?

what make /model/year car is it ?
and what kind of tranny ?
4-5 or 6 speed ?

I suppose if it gets really cold where you live, but I might use something else come summer time ?

the transmission is a G25M-R mazda transmission. the car is a 1993 mazda 323 and the engine is a 2.5L KL-ZE (Japan-only engine). The gearbox is pretty high mileage and has seen some fatal abuse. Needless to say the synhros are not the happiest and dont co-operate 100%. The XD-3 has made a pretty positive change.

So it's the MX3 1.8L V6 tranny?
If Esso is low in moly it should work fine.
If the bearings buzz in the summer time switch to a GL-4 75W90 like Redline MT-90.
Some people like Redline Shockproof in these trannies but I don't like it for more than 10-15k.

a 15w40 is roughtly equiv to 75w-90 in Gear Oil specs. I dont wanna run any gf-4/5 oils because they commonly contain sulphur. There are specialty synth's that are GL-4 with no sulphur, but they cost so much and as i recall didnt perform as well as this XD-3 is!

We've got Coastal 20W50 in my buddy's Capri XR2 tranny (it in a '88 323 hatch, BP engine). It shifts great, my buddy says it's better than the Neo GL-5 that was in it before.

I looked at the Esso VOA, 1.49% sulfated ash? But there's nothing on a MTF VOA to compare it too.

FWIW, the '88 323 FSM specs ATF for -18C/0F and 80W90 or SAE90 gear oil for "normal" temps.
I ran LtWt Shockproof and it was fine except the bearings buzzed on really hot days (+100F).

I think a 30 or 40wt would be fine for Canada.
I'd still prefer a 50wt for the summer.
Maybe one of the newer "Euro" oils is low in SAPS? GC?

Hey Max
Im sure for your situation that the esso 0w-40 would be fine. After all you have a ton of km's on it, If you threw in a 75w-90 in there your shifting would go to the dogs., especially come winter time.

And blazer, relax dude, " I was asking.... max wonder", Sounds like we are in 6th grade again.

I had a 323 once, and that 75-90 was the recomended lube for the tranny, so I threw in my input, it is a forum after all, we can all play together like good little children...!

Max let us know how your tranny holds up over the next little while, im curious how the esso will hold up against shearing in your gear case.

I see no reason why the XD3 couldn't be used. Many automakers use ATF and motor oil in the gearboxes over the years. I believe that the movement to OEM MTF's is because newer SM oils are overly friction modified for MPG, and for reduced wear without using the 'known' enviro-bad additives.

The XD3, being a HDEO, seems to be an acceptable substitute. But, since there are plenty of good GL4/GL5 synthetic gear oils, I'd use one of those 1st.

Another option is to step down to an 85wt. Either use an OEM fluid, the SF MTL-P, or blend your own using the Amsoil, Redline, or RP fluids.
