ESP 0W30 vs. ESP 5W30 Pricing

The WM online price for M1 5W30 ESP is similar to Advance Auto , Auto Zone , etc. at $35 while the everyday WM price for M1 5W30 is $27. While there could be something special about the M1 5W30 SP , I’m not sure if it is better than the M1 0W30 ESP for almost $10 less per jug ?
the walmart price was not $27 when i made that post.

Walmart is out of stock on the 5w-30 ESP.

The big reason is that the 5w30 is only being stocked online and not In store from that screenshot. So it’s higher to reflect the shipping costs on their end. You’ll get free shipping because it’s over $35
I think it is likely more to do with low volume and therefore not worth stocking in stores, and lower volume need higher price to justify stocking it even online.

Site stock must be regional then. In stock here in the midwest with same-day delivery.
Every time I used to order the QS 5W40 it would come from the Midwest (Kansas?). So who knows how their warehousing works. I quit ordering because instead of 4x5 quart jugs, onetime I got 3 plus some flavored drink pouches. Not worth the time for me to go through correcting these kind of problems. I buy from the store now.

The only euro oils available at WalMart in the Pacific NW is Mobil 1 0w-40. Everything else is either not stocked or only in quarts.
Been that was for close to two years. I only order online from Walmart, because I have to. And most recently, I just buy it on Ebay...the sellers are fulfulling their orders through WalMart anyway. I have received three orders in the past month of QS Euro 5w-40 all from WalMart. The prices jump up and down weekly...I just wait until it is $18 or $19 a jug and place an order. It is slow to arrive as I think the sellers consolidate orders...so it might be 3 to 6 days before they place the order with WalMart...then it arrives at your door two days later.
Not sure how they can sell it so cheap, but I'm not complaining.

I'm going to order some Pennzoil Euro L 5w-30...I will do that off eBay. It's less expensive there as well.

It’s likely fraud. They are using stolen accounts to place the order with Walmart to ship to you while effectively laundering it for cash by taking your payment. The extra they pay Walmart over what they charge you is a fee they are happy to pay since everything they receive is free money anyway. They price under Walmart so you have incentive to buy it from them and not just buy it from Walmart in the first place.

The victim is the old man whose card has been stolen and he doesn’t even know it, or Walmart if they get the chargeback or the CC company who ends up writing it off. 😟

Interesting. The accounts on eBay were opened between July and Sept of 2024. Home base is Thailand for the sellers I used...which are all probably the same guy. There are others in Malaysia and Vietnam. So you believe this is simply credit card fraud?

I doubt any credit card owner is paying the bill...but the banks surely are, and passing those costs onto their customers.

Almost certainly. Very hard to combat for platforms like eBay and Amazon. They don’t have a lot of incentive either, they are getting paid and the customer also gets their order, so no complaints there either. 😮

Had dinner with a friend tonight and told him about your post...he said it is notorious on eBay...guess I am last to know. This also explains how my girlfriend was wondering how she was ordering a supplement for our horses for $50 less than what she pays from the online horse supply...yet it is coming from the same horse supply store!

Fraud and scams are just way too rampant on the big ecommerce sites. I'll order some things that are shipped/sold by amazon/walmart directly, ebay is mostly for used parts.

Besides the scams, the number of counterfeit commodities (spark plugs, filters, injectors, etc.) is just way too high.

I'm reluctant to post this because it's likely an over active imagination, but, the ESP 5W30 seems to make my 230i (B46) run smoother.

Actually took advantage at the now good price on WM to purchase next oil change.

It is what it is. On my Tiguan it seems to use less of the 0W-30 so who knows.

From what I've read on the ROC, there is something very unique about the 5w30 ESP SP version. As we've seen, it has no moly, no ester and much less boron. The guys on the ROC seem to suggest it's using some new Infineum system. To add further confusion, we know Triple Action was born from using additives outside the norm from the cosmetic industry.

There is also potentially mPAO in the latest 5w30 SP formulatin and they also could be using diblock VM. That could add to the price.

Both the M1 0W30 ESP and the M1 5W30 ESP are now both the same price at WM ($27) . *Which one would you choose and why ?

I'm of the opinion that oils generally get better and not worse. I'd be equally confident in both. Remains a mystery why the 5w30 grade looks very different on paper.

I was hoping someone on the ROC site would find out because the FTIR they do. It's definitely an interesting oil because of such low additive levels, - no moly, not much boron and no ester per virgin oxidation value. But you can't meet the specs it does without using top notch components. The spec tells you it's good.

Speculated could be using organic ester friction modifier instead of moly and some mPAO.

fwiw, one of the guys on the ROC said it seems to handle high temps even better. That was also stated in one of the F1 articles too.

Maybe it's derived from their F1 tech?

"We searched for the characteristics we wanted in many different industries, including cosmetics, and from there, we brought in some new components to our race oil formulation,’ highlights Young. ‘Specifically, we were able to eliminate some of the metals and limit the content of others, making this oil stand out in sustainability as well as performance.’

‘To further improve the sustainability, we have adjusted the chemistry of our base stocks. The base stocks are the most significant percentage of engine oil by volume. We challenged ourselves to see if we could use environmentally friendlier things at the pinnacle of motorsports. Over 25 per cent of the base oil used in Mobil 1's Formula 1 race engine oil this season is bio-based content."
