Animals are animals. I've been chased by bulls, bitten by horses, even got chased by a gator one time when I was 15, (yes, it's true, they pick up their tale when they run, but they don't corner too well - hence the reason I'm here today).

Dogs are animals as well. I think we tend to forget that. As much as we love our dogs and count them as dear members of the family, we must remember that a dog has no morals or remorse. I'm always shocked when I visit people with little children and a great big dog in the house. Whenever I mention it, the owners tell me, "oh, but he's so gentle." It only takes one time for a tragedy to happen. The problem is too many people have seen too many Disney movies and honestly believe that when we go to sleep, the dogs stay up late smoking cigars and playing poker, (go ahead, somebody admit it, you actually have the velvet rug hanging next to the statue of Elvis in your garage).

Regardless of what everyone is saying about spastic Golden Retrievers, it's still an animal and the owner should act accordingly.

Its comical you word it like that. Funny thing is people out here aren't getting bit by "vicious" dogs. Maybe its the other way around people in the cities have their dogs cooped up and don't treat them well. And it causes vicious dogs. If a golden retriever is being vicious there is something wrong with the owner. They are normally well tempered animals. The majority of dogs are not vicious. I am amazed by the number of people who are so scared of dogs though. The fear is pretty ridiculous. And here is what I would do in the case of the dogs attacking you. Carry a gun if it attacks shoot it. To me it sounds like the op is afraid of dogs and is getting more worked up than he needs to be. There is a mature level headed way to handle a problem. So handle it.

All joking aside....HOA's can be very helpful in keeping a community from becoming a noisy slum. In many decades past, HOA's were not needed as the civility and common courtesy of your neighbor was equal to your own. As a nation we've become inconsiderate, selfish, filthy, and rude. No, I'm not America bashing, but the reality of today compared to earlier times in this country is incomparable. Kindness has turned to anger, quite and calm has become noisy and spasmodic, and everybody has contorted the words...."my rights" into "I'll do whatever I want to no matter how it effects others".

This is true but I disagree with some. When i was a kid I grew up with a lab dane mix. I had a bully who was trying to throw me in the lake that dog stood in front of me long ways and kept him from touching me. He never bit anyone he knew it was another kid but he wasn't going to let another anyone hurt me. So I do think dogs have a sense of morals. Growing up with dogs I could tell when they are sad happy and angry. I think what people NEED to realize is it usually isn't the dog it is their upbringing. Like so many other things humans screw up pets are just one of them , but we don't want to blame ourselves.

My wife takes my 140 pound Rottwieller with her when she goes for a walk with my 4 month old to protect her from SMALLER dogs. These owners think that just because their dog is only 20 pounds, its ok to let it out in the front lawn because it wouldn't hurt a fly. Well, these dogs come charging in a vicious way just like any dog does. Some even attack, biting the stroller or our ankles. The owner would come running, trying to get the dog under control.

With the Rotty next to us, the little buggers bark from a distance

My Rottwieller is extremely gentle and well behaved inside the house, where he's been since the day we brought him home at 8 weeks old. Although he has bitten over a dozen friends that would come over the house and pet him (even though I worned them not to touch the dog) I feel perfectly safe with my 4 month old around the dog. He licks his feet while he's in his swinging chair and would gently steal my sons toys from his hand when he gets a chance (he loves to tear up anything that squeaks).

He's now 5 years old and we got a kitten. The dog is as gentle as can be with the cat but will chase the stray cats outside if given the chance.

The point of my post is, I'm more [censored] off at owners of small dog breeds that think its ok to let their dog roam freely without a leash. What if I let my Rottwieller out because I THINK he wouldn't hurt a fly (he'll hurt / kill anything else that moves though)

Fact is the HOA covenants are brought to the attention of any home buyer BEFORE they sign on the dotted line.

NOBODY is forcing anyone to buy if they DO NOT want to adhere to the HOA guidelines.

BTW just heard from another neighbor that one of those same dogs actually did bite and break the skin, the individual in question said that he wished he would have pursued the issue legally, but the sheriff's deputy said it wasn't worth it....

One of the reasons why was he felt sorry for the old lady....

And it seems that folks love to post responses to my comments WITHOUT fully reading them....I said that I actually like dogs.

Bottom line is you CANNOT let a dog run at large and you MUST be in control of the animal AT ALL TIMES, according to the laws here.

Besides being a violator of the law the owner is thumbing his nose at his neighbor because he doesn't give a rats [censored] about your safety, well being, or piece of mind.

If the dog has bit someone and the owner is negligent go do something about it. If you feel the dog is a threat then make it stop. Its fine that you rant on here but if you aren't perusing the issues you are just wasting energy.

If the dog is truly a threat you have an obligation to try and keep trying to solve the issue. So no one else gets bit. But some members have an attitude that all dogs are vicious and that is plain wrong. Dogs are very useful , crime dogs , dogs for the blind ect. Most dogs are good. Its the owners that cause the issue.

Actually its very much the opposite. In the suburbs (I wouldnt know about the cities), people spend time walking, playing with and taking care of their dogs. We have a few giant dog park areas where they can get together, and everyone I know takes their dogs out to the parks and lets them get out in a controlled fashion. Out in the boonies is where Ive been charged at more times than I can count by dogs.

How would you take it if I took a swing at you but didnt actually punch you in the face, each time you passed by me? You probably wouldnt like it. How would you like it if each time you walked across a parking lot, someone ran at you full-speed, and you didnt know what their intent was? No different with dogs.

Nobody out minding their own business should have to deal with the menace of a dog charging at them, even if the intent is "friendly" on part of the dog.

We are talking about a dog not humans. If a dog runs at you tail wagging and tongue flopping he is being friendly. To get so worked up about that is annoying. Yes i guess in the suburbs they should be on a leash . But the thought of calling the cops on a friendly dog is nuts. They just end up putting the dogs down. We punish an animal for the idiot human behavior. How about finding the dog another home . Some dogs are vicious but most the time it is not the dogs fault. And in the city its crowded. Why people in the city own big dogs is beyond me. They were created to have room to move not be trapped on asphalt and concrete. But people do it and then chain it up (which has the tendency to make them mean" or let them loose. They shouldn't be allowed to run. But its simple to fix report the owners and if it bites you or attacks you shoot it.
So many people have this attitude of all dogs are bad and are vicious and that is absurd.

A Sheriff's Department Sargent came to visit my folks regarding the issue and this is interesting, when my Dad was discussing the actions to take if the dogs were to threaten them on the street Dad mentioned that he would fend them off (there are two of them) with a stick..whereupon the Sargent replied that those sticks won't be of much help, my wife and I carry pistols along with us when we walk our dogs, if you are threatened on the street shoot the dogs, you can put that on the record. He proceeded to show my folks in writing about this policy that applies to the law in our county. I already carry when I'm out running.

There have been a number of similar situations here and in NO case was the shooter held responsible for any damage to dogs terminated due to threatening a pedestrian on a public street. Very good news.

That is one of the wonderful things down here, the law realizes it can't be there to protect you so you need to handle things on your own.
