I just completed the cleaning phase using Auto RX on a 1992 Buick 3.3 V6. The oil appeared to be very clean, similar to when I put it in 1,500 miles ago. The oil filter seemed to be noticably heavier, I'm hoping that's because it's full of stuff I don't want in the engine. When I emptied the oil collection pan at the bottom I could see the dark black color of the Auto Rx mixed in with the oil. During the rinse phase will the oil likely be darker?

You know, I have that same exact question. I just finished my first clean cycle, and noticed things have stayed fairly clean, even though I ended up putting well over 2000 miles on it. Sorry but the over 500 miles I put on it today kinda blew the whole 1500 mile thing. Well it lasted 2 weeks anyways. Going to be changing oil tommorrow am. Hope to see some cleaning during rinse cycle. Anyways, if the Auto RX really does clean best when hot, then that little 500+ mile run should have really cleaned some stuff out considering my speed varied between 80 mph - 100 mph the entire way, with only 2 quick stops for gas.

On my wife's previous car (just traded in) the ARX oil after 1500 miles didn't look real dirty.

The 2000 mile rinse oil came out looking like tar. This after being run for 30k on nothing but Mobil 1, but in fairness I will say that she bought the car used with 29k on it.

Did you guys notice your oil staying clean during part of the rinse phase, then getting dirty in the second half, or did it get dirty quickly? In my '85 Accord, three changes ago the oil was jet black in 600 miles, now I'm 1000 miles into the first rinse phase and the oil looks as clean as the day it was put in...

Rinse Phase is to lift off liquefied contaminants
laying on internal engine parts (we use Conventional Oil
for this part of the application) each of you will see different results at different times, this do to how dirty engine was at beginning of Auto-Rx application.

All of you will have clean ring packs which equals
better compression which also has the added benefit of more efficient combustion.

Using the Auto-Rx 3 ounce per oil change after cleaning is finished will keep your gains right at
same performance, thats with any oil.

What happens if you have a somewhat dirty engine and you merely go with the 3 oz per oil change? In other words, can the cleaning be done slowly over the course of say 8 or 10 OCIs? Or would a slightly stronger than maintenance dose, say 5 oz, be needed for that?

Open the filter and let us know.

Just changed my oil for the rinse phase. The filter was very clean and the oil was still light in color.

I was wondering the same thing, I have a new truck with a clean engine and only 20K miles on it (10K with amsoil) I dont see how putting a full dose in will do anything?

I don't think it would hurt, but if that's the case then I don't see that you need ARX yet either. Even the most anal among us only use it every 30k.

What if instead of ARX you switch over to a true synthetic oil (Group IV and/or V). That, I understand, would pretty much prevent deposits from ever forming in your engine in the first place. If your manual and warranty tell you to use 5w20 then you have even more reason to use a true synthetic--better protection.

So those of you that run it every 30K, do you see any crap come out during the rinse? or does it just look like normal oil?

My concern is how to open an oil filter without contaminating the filter element. Example, I cut one open with a 'saws all' blade and it got metal chips from cutting all over the element. I could see the condition of the element and the color, but as to particles it was no good. I then thought about just turning the whole filter upside down on a coffee filter and putting them both in a funnel overnight to monitor the drained particles. What do you think? Will it show me the trapped contamination?

Go around, a bit above the base, with a chisel or old screwdriver and a hammer and in about 10 mins. you be in it! Hint: after the original hole let the oil drain out.

When you see what comes out of rinse phase you will want to change oil and filter and it really is in your best interest to follow appliocation instructions, we build in safety factors for those who can't go to rinse oil at 2000 miles for whatever reason. After cleaning is completed your at max compression and most efficent combustion,3 ounce program designed to keep your engine at these performance points. To try and use 3 ounces as a full cleaner is self defeating Auto-Rx works on ratio's for job it is to do, 3 ounces does not clean a dirty engine.

Frank I understand what you are saying but my engine should not be dirty. I have used valvoline for the first 9K for break in (3k changes) and then switched to amsoil full syn. With only 18K on the truck it should be squeaky clean or do you think there would be crap from the valvoline? My amsoil usually stays golden in color for about 3-4K.
