One of those things.
Rangers were reliable. As were their B Series counterparts

The plastic molding and rubber trim would rot before the engine.

Ford getting rid of it for the Eco F Series "replacement" was both dumb and smart.

There is, and always has been a market for smaller trucks with not all the bells and whistles.

Yet I can see ford from a profit point. A 25k$ F Series with same gas mileage versus a 17K$ small truck.

Dakotas from Dodge were those "Small but big trucks" as was the Colorado From GM. And the Toyota Tacoma is getting there too

I one day hope for another era of Rangers, S10s and that class of truck

Agree on the LQ4; they're simple, stout, inexpensive, and can make a silly amount of power. As more and more enthusiasts discover these engines in the junkyard, their reputation and desirability will grow...

L96 incorporates VVT, and is too new at this point for the legendary status...


LQ4 is good but not as good as the LQ9 High output version like in my 2006 Sierra Denali. But yes - the 6.0L engines are deserving of this list.

Having personally owned one that easily went 500k miles without ever smoking, leaking, or burning oil this would be my choice also.

A very simple engine, extremely compact sizing, easy to mod if you desire...

The real world impossibilities that occur here on BITOG are no less than amazing...

You may think it was stuck shut but it didn't happen, not in any engine(at least if it's driven more than a couple miles at a time)...

The way the cooling system was plumbed on the car, the temp sensor was always reading low. But the heat coming out of the heater core was insane and the engine would ping worse and worse as you drove. I hit the temp housing with an iR Thermometer once and it was between 230 and 240F. Opening the hood would hit me with massive heat.

Replaced the thermostat and everything seemed to be better.

351 Clevelands not so much


Ranger 3.0 is the vulcan v6 183 ci.
 
1999-2003 GM 5.3L in Trucks/SUVs

Honda 2.4L in 2004-2006 Accords and CR-V

Honda 3.5L in Ridgeline, Pilot, Acura variants

Toyota 22R in the trucks

All late 70's and 80's Toyota truck 4 cyl engines (22R?)



My Toyota 5.7L in this Tundra is most likely going to be on the list one day...

If thermostat were stuck shut it would have seen higher than 230/240*, at least till it blew out the coolant, then zoomed past 300* and quit... I've seen my 5.0 T-Bird at 230* in traffic numerous times and that's with all new components(solid Turbo Coupe header panel is cause of that)...
 
I suspect a large majority of cars sent to the crusher were for reasons other than engine failure. No telling how many more miles those cars had in them.

Umm Chevy 350 Diesel, whatever was in the Vega, that Cadillac V8-6-4 magic, Chrysludger 2.7, anything that requires head gasket maintenance before 10,000 miles (hello, Subaru), anything that states using 1qt every 1000 miles is normal (oh you again Subaru!), mazda millenia, Miller Cycles sure proved well. Ford 3.8 was a real wonder, could never figure out why they ran so bad. 140hp Olds 307 was of legendary performance, so many vacuum hoses an old wh*re would be jealous. Anything labeled with the words Quad and Four. Never seen a high mileage Nissan without a replacement engine in it so cant comment on those! Toyota 2.4 with their messed piston issues causing oil burning, dont worry toyota i wont say anything about your s-l-u-d-g-e issues. Any Honda with an oil soaked rear bumper, possibly with the words DOHC VTEC tatooed on the sides.

Thats my experience, your results may vary.

GM's 350 Diesel was a Oldsmobile abomination... The later ones were better, sometimes could make 100K mi of mostly highway operation... With only a injection pump failure and one broken head bolt(that I rep and did not change gasket), I actually ran one up to 133K mi before I sold it... Next owner blew it up in approx six months...

The 2300 Vega aluminum block with cast iron head was Chevy's own fiasco... They fixed it in '76 by using steel cylinder liners(plus gave a 60K mi warranty), but by that time few would touch it... Pontiac touted the Iron Duke for their '77 Astre models, Chevy followed suit in '78 by dropping both the aluminum engine and Vega(kept Monza), and started using the "Duke" as well...
