Engine wear?

150PPM iron would give most of us a stroke if we saw that in our engine. Blackstone says 100-200PPM is in the acceptable range for iron. Will these higher iron numbers like your example translate to the modern gas engines like mine with simular results in wear.

tig1 - Yes I expect so. In petrol engines I would probably use Fe at 100ppm as one condemnation point but some diesel engine families tolerate Fe at up to 250ppm

It is all a balance really, as developments in metallurgy occur so the balancing act may change

As a rule here on BITOG I have seen a lot of meaningless discussions on Fe and other wear metals in relationship to lubricant Brands and Types and their performance. Mainly this is on single pass or non trended used oil analysis. Meaningless stuff really

Reading used oil analysis is a bit of an art. They are useful for reading the condition of the lubricant, and sometimes valuable for the exceptions that occur in trending an engine/component - or a family of like
 
Sometimes you can see down the oil fill hole and note a camshaft wearing fast.
A rod knock, bottom end knock, or piston pin double knock can be heard.

But the guys are right - after BIG miles, only a tear down can compare and show us things.

For any particular car, keep our ears open and dig to see how certain engines live, and what they like. Glean information from others .

The most important wear is in rings/liners and valvetrain, all iron, unless you use alloys for liners. The only significant wear you will miss will be piston scoring.
 
I think I know where this is going.
Tig is a mobil guy. Mobil tends to show elevated wear metals in uoa. Tig wants to know if these wear metals are significant or just noise.
I doubt very much a few ppm makes a lick of difference on the longevity of an engine. Sure some uoa show elevated metals but is that from how it's driven or the oil in the sump. Perhaps both.
I'm gonna stand with any API approved oil,changed at proper intervals will make the engine outlive the car. I don't care which oil it is,as long as it's approved.
This statement does not apply to cars that see track duty.
Wadaya think bitog,am I close?

Personally i am just as concerned with the bearings. You can still run the engine even with worn rings but bad bearing will sideline you quick.

Tig1 is a Mobil guy for sure, but more importantly than that, Tig1 is a long lasting, clean, and healthy engine guy. In the end that's what it's all about. That's why engine wear is a big concern to me. I want my engines to be around doing every thing I ask of it for as long as I own it.

Are you saying 0W20 synthetic oil can't go 10K?
