Engine rough when cold. Should I use heavier oil?

I have a 22 year old Toyota Landcruiser, 4.2L diesel, no turbo with 400,000km on the clock.
When I start driving, the engine sounds rough with first rattling then whining.
After it heats up, it runs just fine.
It runs 10W40. It never gets cold here in the tropics.
Would a heavier oil, say 20W50, be an improvement or would that cause me any problems?

When the engine is "cold" (
I'm leaning more toward a tired and worn engine, with wider piston skirt and ring gap clearances, not sealing well until it gets some heat in it.

I am sure you are right, which is a pity really. Changing the oil is a lot less costly than changing the engine.
It is not consuming any oil though so I'll stick with the rattling for another 100k or so.

Cheers

With 400,000 km on it my bet is the engine has some mechanical issue/issues that need to be addressed. I doubt going with a "heavier" oil is going to help much, or for very long.

Most 10W40's and 20W50's are PCMO's. I would run a 15W40 HD oil in your IDI diesel and call it a day. I've owned several IDI diesels over the years and none of them sound as quiet when cold compared to warmed up.

Does it start easy enough with normal cranking time?

I am not familiar with 4.2D

Mine is 3.0TD....KZ-TE.....that E adds electronic control valve on/in the injector pump....

If it malfunctions....starts become as yours....and smoky also (too much fuel at startup)...

Injector pump also has 3 washable mesh filters (one is under that electronic valve)....if thej are plouged/dirty....engine also smokes @accerlation (inproper amount of fuel in the system)

Try to clean/set its injector pump first!

@specialist.....or buy yourself a Haynes manual!

Here is example for injector pump in my engine.....find HOW TO on YT for yours!
