My 06 hyundai accent with ~46K miles on it has developed an annoying "clatter" when cold. It seems to be louder when I let my foot off the gas and goes away completely after warmed up. Here is a link to video with sound. Is this piston slap, injectors, or normal??

That is how my 06' Saturn VUE with the Honda 3.5L would sound upon startup. I was told, in my case, that it was injector sound and was normal. The mileage on that vehicle was 60,500 miles.

I witnessed severe piston slap recently with my Dad's 99' Forester. It was noticeably louder than the video you recorded. Almost 3000 bucks later, the mechanic fixed the problem.

I am not an expert, just trying to help with my opinion.

Thanks,

If it's just noise for whatever reason, I can deal with it. If it is noise and wear on the engine, then I want to pursue its correction while Im still in warranty (which is to 100,000mi). I want to drive this car for as long as I can.

Let's put it this way. If I heard this on my engine, and it was under warranty, I'd be down there posthaste. Hyundai's have great warranties, take advantage of it.

While I don't have an Accent, my '07 Elantra SE with the 2.0 engine sounds just a little louder than that when the engine is cold. Lasts till the temp gauge starts to move. When I was shopping for my Elantra, everyone that I looked at did it to some degree. I have a feeling the type of oil you use affects it, because when the dealer changed the oil(1st change was free), they used regular 5w20 Pennzoil. Got quite a bit worse. I recently changed the oil, mainly because of the noise, to the recommended 5w20 Quaker State. Not quiet, but much better than the Pennzoil. Btw, I only have 5900 miles on mine.

I had that issue with my 2006 GMC truck 6.0L. Took it to the dealer under warranty and the gave it the GM top end cleaner treatment where you inject the TB and then remove the spark plugs and soak the piston tops overnight. No more cold start tick. They followed up with a letter from GM extending my engine warranty to 100,000 miles/6 years. SO you both may have

It's weird because I never really noticed it until I switched over to synthetic (PP 5w30) and now I hear it even after switching to the syntec blend.

Yep. A new symptom is popping up that involves combustion deposits. It's often assumed it's some piston slap or whatnot. It just so happens to fit the same noise reduction profile. In the case of the combustion chamber deposits, the valves manage to pulverize it without damage.

Yep, It's carbon build up from my 6 mile commute. I am going to try some regular maintenance with RL S-1 fuel system cleaner and a few freeway trips and see if that helps keep it clean.
