Engine contaminated during oil filter replacement

The amount of residual dirty oil looks to be about 2-3 ounces in the photo; hence, the contamination level will be immeasurable when you add 5 quarts of new oil to the engine. If you are OCD enough to worry about it, just pour a quart of clean oil down the opening to dilute the residual oil before installing the filter cartridge.

When I unscrew the lid the oil is all the way to the top. I have to wait after loosening the lid for the oil to drain down enough to take the lid off without it flooding everywhere. ... When it rains it drains down the clean side hole that feeds the engine

Try this.
Loosen the oil fill cap and get the drain plug out. Then loosen the filter cap. This will get the majority of the oil away from the oil filter area. A slight vacuum is created.

Very typical on German vehicles. Much preferred to pulling oil filter while under the car. With engine warm (NOT hot) loosen the filter cap, remove the engine oil fill cap and then raise the vehicle and drain the oil at the oil drain plug This will avoid a vacuum in the oil circulation system and allow the old filter to drain thoroughly. Result is less mess in the engine bay and more complete drainage of the old oil.
