I've come to think that energy sources are not the problem, storage is the problem.

With all the solar and wind available for individual usage, a practical storage device to keep the energy for use is what's needed.

As of now, trees are storing much of the solar energy that has been created, they just don't store it efficiently enough.

I'd imagine other sources (hydrogen?) present the same problem.

i think that is part of the story.

we need:

convenient storage
convenient transportation
efficient conversion
low emissions
safe usage (in storage, transportation, conversion)

abundant and/or renewable are part of the whole picture.
