I am in the rinse phase of auto rx. I have about 1500 miles on it currently, I am going to be taking a trip to California in the Jeep. If I change the oil before the trip it will be 2000 to 2500 miles of rinse phase. Otherwise I will have to pay to have a quick lube place change it while on vacation, which obviously I dont want. so is that last 500-1000 miles that important??? The oil I will be using is Rotella Synthetic 5w-40 in a Jeep 4.0L at around 6-7k intervals.......

I'd change the oil filter right before the trip and not worry about it. Change it for real when you return.

I think the whole rinse phase is overthought. A lot of users I know need synthetic oil in their cars, so it is not wise financially to drain it early. I tell them to either run a full oci or use some dino oil and just run it a few days, literally to rinse it out. In your case, just drain it and get on with your normal oil changes and enjoy your vacation.

Since the rinse phase does not contain any Auto RX, there is nothing special about it. It's just fresh oil that is put in to strip off the deposits that Auto RX loosened up, but the clean phase was not able to carry away due to already being saturated with what it had picked up.

The reality is that the "rinse phase" isn't going to just all of a sudden halt by changing the oil early. New oil will just continue where the old oil left off, and may in fact do even more cleaning since it is not already saturated with sludge.

Change the filter and top with new oil if necessary. When you get back from your trip you can change both the oil and the filter . The rinse phase is 3000 miles NOT 2500.

Are you saying you will have a rinse type oil brand new in your engine at the start of your trip ? if so change the filter every 2500 miles (not the oil) and top off with fresh oil if necessary.

yes I am currently running chevron 5w30Had a filter change at 1500 miles with a topoff, at the start of the trip I want to run Rotella Synthetic 5w40. Or would it be better to just change the filter on the chevron again top it off and leave it there for the trip ???

Do you expect to find a clogged filter if you cut it open? I mean, is there any reason to believe the engine is very sludgy and would drop a lot of deposit load into the filter? Your filter will continue to work until fully loaded and then the BPV will kick in and still allow flow. There is little risk to doing either, changing or not. I'm not a big believer of mid-oci filter changing.
