i do taxes & "have letters," so to speak. I agree with what Boat owner said.
But having had clients in your situation i'll also say that it generally doesn't take a LONG time to explain why someone's tax liabilty changed drastically from one year to the next.
In fact i just reminded someone how the tax effect of their one daughter graduating tech school and son turning 19 was a situation that i had already warned them about over a year ago.
I recall one accountant NOT being cooperative with a client's request simply because he STRONGLY suspected shady business on the client's end and he was in an awkward position of NOT wanting to accuse them of anything but also NOT wanting to put them in harm's way. (not to imply that's necessarily your situation)
Then there's another situation where someone was insistent on getting a deduction for his work pants. And i explained to him that saving roughly 1 dollar on state taxes wouldn't warrant his wanting to seek a higher paid professional.
Afterwhich someone advised me to avoid said individual (for reasons in addition to the above).
